Job description

The Process Engineer will:
  • Administer the U. S. Steel Safety program to ensure a safe work environment in the Edgar Thomson Plant.
  • Learn foundations of the integrated steelmaking process, specifically hot metal production at the Blast Furnace.
  • Utilize management skills to supervise and direct employee efforts to achieve operational goals and increase efficiency.
  • Develop and forecast blast furnace raw material burdens to meet hot metal production targets, quality requirements, and optimal fuel rates.
  • Coordinate raw material logistics and testing with third party entities (Railroads, Chemistry Laboratories, Raw Material Producers, USS Research, Etc.) to ensure operating plan is met and raw material inventory, chemistry, and quality is satisfactory.
  • Optimize procedures (Safety SJPs, Quality SQPs, and Production SOPs) to continuously improve operational performance.
  • Required to participate in incident investigations, determine root cause analysis for process upsets and equipment failures, administer production reports and supporting documentation to Operations supervision.
  • Be active in operating areas within the Blast Furnace department to facilitate understanding of equipment and requirements of efficient operation.
  • Create and implement projects in accordance with U. S. Steel's cost savings initiatives, currently known as SynEx.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mineral Processing, Metallurgical, or Chemical Engineering.
  • Preferred candidate will have mining or heavy industry experience.
  • Coordination and direction of the safe, efficient, and economical operation of the facility.
  • Utilization of management skills to supervise, direct and coordinate the efforts of employees assigned to the operating facility to maximize operating efficiencies with minimum interruption.
  • Implementation of the production plan by coordinating material movement and equipment operation to meet customer's specifications -- including quality, delivery requirements, etc.
  • Administration of operating facilities' personnel, production reports, policies and procedures and other reporting as necessary.
  • Learn and understand the steelmaking process.
  • This role is primarily a daylight position; but overtime, weekend coverage, and occasional rotating shift schedules will be required.
