Position Overview

The AES Group Inc. is seeking an experienced Electrical Design Engineer specializing in power distribution and utility systems to support one of our clients in the power and utilities industry.

This role provides a hands-on opportunity to design, analyze, and deliver electric distribution projects for major investor-owned utilities. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical knowledge of overhead and underground distribution systems, utility engineering standards, power system analysis, and client-facing project execution.

The selected engineer will work closely with utility stakeholders, municipalities, field teams, and internal engineering groups to deliver accurate, reliable, and compliant design solutions. This position is well-suited for a motivated professional prepared to take on increased technical responsibility while contributing to real-world infrastructure and grid improvement projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and engineer overhead and underground electric distribution systems, typically operating between 4 kV and 34 kV.
  • Perform or support load flow, voltage drop, short-circuit, protection coordination, and related power system studies.
  • Execute distribution engineering projects for investor-owned utilities and regional electric operating companies.
  • Interpret and apply client-specific engineering standards, specifications, design criteria, construction practices, and documentation requirements.
  • Support distribution planning, capacity analysis, reliability improvement, system reinforcement, and infrastructure upgrade initiatives.
  • Coordinate project activities with utility clients, municipalities, field personnel, permitting teams, and internal project stakeholders.
  • Prepare, review, and check engineering calculations, drawings, reports, design packages, and technical deliverables.
  • Ensure all deliverables meet applicable quality, safety, regulatory, engineering, and client compliance requirements.
  • Contribute to the improvement of engineering templates, procedures, technical standards, and delivery best practices.
  • Identify opportunities to improve project efficiency, reduce costs, strengthen quality, and support organizational profitability.
  • Perform additional engineering and project-related responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Active Professional Engineer license; Illinois licensure is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in electric utilities, power delivery, distribution engineering, or utility consulting.
  • Demonstrated experience designing overhead and/or underground electric distribution systems.
  • Working knowledge of utility engineering standards, construction practices, design documentation, and project delivery requirements.
  • Experience using power system analysis software such as CYME, Synergi Electric, ETAP, or comparable platforms.
  • Strong written, verbal, analytical, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work directly with clients, technical teams, field personnel, and internal stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting a major investor-owned utility or electric operating company.
  • Familiarity with utility operations across Illinois or other regulated utility markets.
  • Experience with Distributed Energy Resource interconnections, including solar, battery storage, and electric vehicle infrastructure.
  • Exposure to grid modernization, distribution automation, smart-grid, and reliability improvement programs.
  • Experience with urban underground, network, or complex distribution systems.
  • Familiarity with utility Geographic Information Systems, work management platforms, and asset management systems.
  • Knowledge of regional utility regulatory requirements and engineering practices.
