Job description

Position Summary

The Heavy Equipment Service Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, maintaining, and inspecting heavy mining equipment, support equipment, and light-duty vehicles to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation. This role performs maintenance both in the shop and in the field; troubleshooting mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems. The mechanic also supports the company’s preventative maintenance program by performing scheduled services, inspections, and component replacements. The mechanic will work closely with equipment operators, supervisors, vendors, and project personnel to ensure equipment availability, operational efficiency, and compliance with all company and regulatory safety standards.

Supervisor Responsibilities

This position has no direct supervisor responsibilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain heavy mining equipment, support equipment, and light duty vehicles, in accordance with manufacturer specifications and company maintenance programs.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, and service work to ensure equipment reliability and availability.
  • Maintain and repair equipment including but not limited to:
    • Large Hydraulic Excavators
    • Haul Trucks
    • Dozers
    • Front-End Loaders
    • Motor Graders
    • Water Trucks
    • Blasthole Drills
    • Support Equipment (Backhoes, Skid steers, Compactors, Rollers, Tractors, etc.)
    • Light-Duty Vehicles
  • Perform daily equipment inspections including fueling, lubrication, and minor mechanical repairs.
  • Read and interpret operator manuals, technical documents, blueprints, and equipment specifications to properly diagnose and complete repairs.
  • Use appropriate hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment to perform repairs and maintenance.
  • Document equipment condition, repairs, service intervals, and inspection results.
  • Maintain equipment files, service records, and preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining accurate equipment maintenance and service plans.
  • Maintain safe, clean, and organized work areas including fueling and oiling operations.
  • Assist operators and project personnel with proper equipment usage, inspection forms, and reporting procedures.
  • Follow all company safety procedures and comply with MSHA, OSHA, and project safety requirements.
  • Assist with other site maintenance tasks and manual labor when required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Typical Physical Demands

  • Ability to stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, and climb for extended periods.
  • Ability to work around heavy equipment safely and effectively.
  • Ability to lift and move items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to climb ladders, platforms, scaffolding, and access elevated equipment as needed.
  • Must be able to work 10–12 hour shifts, including rotating days, nights, weekends, and required overtime.
  • Must be able to pass preemployment drug and alcohol screening.
  • Must have full range of motion and manual dexterity to perform job duties.

Typical Working Conditions

Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments. Duties may involve exposure to changing weather conditions, noise, dust, uneven surfaces, confined spaces, and active equipment or machinery, requiring strict adherence to all safety and environmental standards. Shifts may include flexible or non-standard hours, including evenings or weekends, based on operational needs. Must follow all safety requirements.

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Previous experience maintaining or repairing heavy equipment in mining, construction, or similar heavy industrial environments preferred.
  • Experience with preventative maintenance programs and equipment inspection processes preferred.
  • Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience that demonstrate the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Licenses, Registration, and Certifications

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license through duration of employment.
  • Must meet all insurability requirements as specified by Westmoreland’s policies or Driver’s insurance provider.

Skills/Competencies

  • Strong working knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems on heavy equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand technical manuals, equipment diagrams, and repair procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, operators, and team members.
  • Problem-solving and decision-making skills
