Job description

Make a meaningful impact by supporting elementary students through sign language interpretation in the Virginia Beach area. This contract position offers a full-time Monday through Friday schedule (35 hours/week), providing essential 1:1 support to young learners across various school locations. Interpreters may be reassigned if the primary student is unavailable, ensuring your expertise is always making a difference.

This role specializes in using sign language for effective communication within educational settings. While experience with Visaphonics is valued, it’s not required—your commitment to clear communication and adaptability is key.

Qualifications:

  • Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) Level III required
  • Strong preference for an EIPA score of 3.5+; those with a 3.0+ will also be considered
  • Alternatively, a QAS score of 3.0 or higher is acceptable
  • Experience providing sign language interpretation, especially in 1:1 settings with elementary-aged students
  • Ability to adapt and provide coverage at multiple locations as needed
  • Professional, collaborative approach and effective problem-solving skills

Responsibilities:

  • Deliver clear, accurate sign language interpretation for students, primarily in a 1:1 capacity
  • Support communication between students, staff, and peers within classroom and school activities
  • Flexibly rotate between school sites in the area if assigned students are temporarily unavailable
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards of the interpreting profession
  • Adapt to a variety of educational settings and support unique student needs
