Job Purpose
The Senior Assistant Superintendent is responsible for overseeing golf course and landscaped area maintenance operations. Under the direction of the Superintendent, the Senior Assistant Superintendent assists in training and supervising staff, resolving human resources issues, and implementing agronomic maintenance and development programs. The Senior Assistant Superintendent provides leadership and guidance to the maintenance team and is responsible for assuming the Superintendent's responsibilities in their absence.
Responsibilities
  • Assist the Superintendent in all facets of daily operations.
  • Act as Superintendent on duty in the absence of the Superintendent.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to Assistant Superintendents and golf course maintenance staff, as applicable.
  • Maintain the appearance and safety of the course by diagnosing and reporting agronomic issues; managing irrigation system adjustments and scheduling; maintaining a wide variety of turfgrasses in extreme climatic conditions; managing course preparations for tournament and daily play; operating various hand and power tools as needed to accomplish mowing, edging, or cultivation; integrating environmental programs specializing in IPM (Integrated Pest Management); overseeing maintenance of the golf cart fleet; and assisting in the coordination, scheduling, and supervision of capital improvement projects.
  • Manage maintenance operations, including employees involved in maintaining greens, fairways, tees, sand traps, bodies of water, roughs, the maintenance shop, golf carts, and clubhouse grounds, by assisting in recruiting, selecting, training, scheduling, evaluating, supervising, and correcting employees when necessary. Assist the Superintendent in conducting safety meetings.
  • Provide day-to-day direction, training, and support to maintenance employees and assist with developing team members.
  • Assist with administrative functions by maintaining maintenance records and developing required maintenance reports; tracking maintenance expenses, including payroll, supplies, fertilizers, chemicals, and other costs; and informing the Superintendent of parts, supplies, or equipment needed.
  • Perform manual labor as needed.
  • Communicate course conditions with the Superintendent, golf staff, and members or guests, as appropriate.
  • Implement and support all American Golf initiatives and programs as requested by management.
  • Other duties may be assigned by management.

Qualifications
  • Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers and management.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with Spanish-speaking co-workers may be required in some locations.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Proven time-management, organization, and prioritization skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in golf course maintenance operations.
  • Member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association preferred.
  • Relevant licenses required by regulatory agencies, including a certified pesticide license.
  • Ability to operate all equipment used for golf course maintenance.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Two- or four-year college degree in Agronomy, Turf Management, Horticulture, or a related field preferred.

Working Conditions
  • Work schedules vary based on business and operational needs. Evening, weekend, and holiday availability may be required.
  • This position requires prolonged periods of standing and walking and may involve climbing, balancing, reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pushing, and pulling.
  • Must be able to use hands and fingers to operate tools and equipment and lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires the visual capabilities necessary to safely perform job duties, including close, distance, peripheral, and color vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Work is primarily performed outdoors and may involve exposure to varying weather conditions, moving mechanical equipment, chemicals, fumes, airborne particles, electrical hazards, and sharp objects.
  • The noise level in the work environment is generally moderate but may vary depending on equipment use and operational activities.
