Weekend Data Science R information

What is a Weekend Data Science R?

A Weekend Data Science R is typically a data scientist or analyst who specializes in using the R programming language to analyze and interpret data, and who works primarily on weekends. This role may be part-time, project-based, or designed for individuals who are balancing other commitments during the week. Weekend Data Science R professionals often handle tasks such as data cleaning, statistical analysis, and creating data visualizations using R. They are valued for their ability to deliver insights and support decision-making processes, often on a flexible schedule. This role is ideal for those who have strong analytical skills and proficiency in R, and who prefer or require weekend work hours.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend Data Science R?

To thrive as a Weekend Data Science R, you need a solid background in statistics, programming (especially in R), and data analysis, often supported by a relevant degree or coursework. Familiarity with data visualization tools, machine learning libraries, and version control systems like Git is commonly required. Excellent problem-solving, time management, and communication skills help you tackle projects independently and convey insights clearly. These skills are crucial for delivering actionable results efficiently while balancing part-time or weekend schedules.

What are some common challenges faced by Weekend Data Science R professionals, and how can they effectively manage project deadlines given a limited work schedule?

Weekend Data Science R professionals often face the challenge of managing complex data analysis projects within a restricted timeframe. Balancing project deadlines with limited availability requires strong time management and clear communication with team members. It's important to set realistic goals for each work session, prioritize tasks that drive the most value, and leverage collaboration tools to stay aligned with colleagues working during weekdays. Building a habit of thorough documentation and regularly syncing with the team ensures that progress continues smoothly, even when not physically present during the standard workweek.

Job description

Job Summary:
Tetra Tech AMT is seeking a Senior Data Scientist to support a new FAA project focused on pre-departure planning and analytics. The role involves collaborating with aviation stakeholders, utilizing advanced statistics and machine learning to predict flight outcomes, and optimizing air traffic management processes.
Responsibilities:
• Establish a process for strategic deconfliction in collaboration with internal and external aviation stakeholders for a new FAA Traffic Flow Management Evolution Program for a potential “24/7” operation
• Use advanced statistics, modeling, and machine learning to predict outcomes and solve complex problems related to anticipating flight delays, flight cancellations, scheduling conflicts, and other aircraft/flight disruptions
• Support tasks that bridge the gap between complex mathematics and business strategy related to how an air traffic management (ATM) system would translate to lower fuel burden, less aircraft downtime, shorter block times, and faster flights
• Work 40 hours a week but potentially work late night shifts and weekends at times to cover overnight and weekend data modeling needs
• Document the FAA process, roles, and responsibilities to enable execution of strategic deconfliction process plan for day of operations in the National Airspace System (NAS)
• Work with FAA and industry vendor(s) who will architect and build the analytical data model and provide feedback as necessary
• Collaborate with FAA stakeholders and external industry partners (as needed) to obtain necessary data to operate logistically optimized model
• Enter data into analytical models (long range and same day planning) to develop strategic deconfliction plans
• As needed, support the training of FAA staff on process execution related to newly designed traffic flow management program
• Document all lessons learned and FAA process improvement opportunities for evolution of strategic deconfliction processes/capability
• Apply knowledge in the domain of engineering and operations research to optimize NAS strategic deconfliction plan
• Define post event analysis criteria and data expectations
• Document recommended process improvement opportunities
• Provide expertise in the design, development, implementation, and analysis of technical FAA products and systems
Qualifications:
Required:
• Have a deep background in air traffic management and airport operations including FAA traffic flow management practices
• Possess broad knowledge of systems engineering and implementation, providing technical expertise in the application of state-of-the-art technology to meet FAA mission and aerospace requirements
• The ability to move beyond off-the-shelf algorithms by understanding their underlying assumptions and limitations
• The ability to train predictive models and scale them using cloud ecosystems
• The patience to clean, process, and extract structure from 'messy' aviation, FAA, airline, weather and other related data, which consumes the majority of the project's time
• Flexible work schedule that may require working at FAA in-person and cover nights, weekends and even some holidays during the year as this is in support of a national and highly visible FAA project
• Potentially be on call to cover shifts when anticipated higher days of operations or team members are unavailable/on scheduled vacation
• Must have at least 20 years of professional years of experience supporting projects as a data scientist but preferably in support of the FAA/NASA or at least the federal government
• Must have a Master’s Degree in technical area (e.g. Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science or Engineering) or related field
Preferred:
• Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) is preferred
