Job description

DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

  • The Oncology Date Specialist accessions, abstracts and maintains records of all patients diagnosed and or treated for cancer by utilizing the cancer registry data system. The information in the cancer registry system is used to provide data for physicians and research studies. The ODS aides the ODS-Coordinator with the analysis of data and dissemination of information within established guideline and in accordance with professional ethics, assist the ODS-Coordinator with weekly Tumor Board, Annual Report, Quality Control and other functions as needed. Participates in performance improvement.

SUPERVISION: Reports directly to the Oncology Date Specialist Coordinator

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Identifies and compiles patient data from a range of relevant sources.
  • Uses reports from a variety of multiple medical facilities, pathology reports.
  • Able to enter data into the computer through accurate use of the software program.
  • Codes site and histology accurately using ICOD-3 code book
  • Stages cases using collaborative stage accurately.
  • Able to request additional treatment information from physician offices, other hospitals as necessary.
  • Performs abstracting in a timely manner as required by COC-90% of cases abstracted within 6 months of date of 1st contact.
  • Assist ODS-Coordinator and physician advisor to solve any problems with abstracting, coding, or staging.
  • Assist with preparation for weekly Tumor Board as necessary.
  • Works as a team player with all coworkers in and out of department.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

  • High School Graduate. Associate Degree in any field required. Medical Terminology class preferred.
  • 3 years Prior experience in Cancer Registry preferred (comparable experience considered).
  • Oncology Data Specialist or certification eligible (must obtain certification within 3 years)
  • Type a minimum of 40 words per minute preferred. Ability to communicate effectively using a variety of electronic medical record systems.
  • Reasoning Ability such as: Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Requires emotional stability and maturity; Must be adaptable to change, be decisive, and demonstrate foresight; Exhibits organizational and leadership ability.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

  • Consistently this employee will need to be able to stay in a stationary position for data entry and be capable of moving around.
  • Will frequently need to be capable of moving 1-10 pounds.
  • May need to adjust their position to maintain computer and other equipment required by position.
  • Continuously needs to be able to operate office equipment, presentation equipment for meetings.
  • Employee would continuously be using their hands and finger for positioning different equipment.
