We are seeking a skilled and culturally responsive ESL Instructor to provide in-person English language instruction to Afghan adults resettled in the New Haven area. This role plays a critical part in helping participants gain the language skills needed to secure employment, navigate daily life, and fully engage in their new communities.
This position is ideal for an educator who values relationship-based teaching, understands the realities of resettlement, and can adapt instruction to meet learners where they are.
Please note: This is an on-site role. Instruction is delivered in person at program and community locations. This position is not hybrid or remote.
Salary: $44,000
What You'll Do
  • Deliver in-person ESL instruction for adult learners from beginner through advanced levels
  • Teach speaking, listening, reading, and writing with a focus on practical, real-world language use
  • Design engaging, interactive lesson plans tailored to varying literacy levels, educational backgrounds, and learning styles
  • Create a welcoming, inclusive classroom environment that builds confidence and encourages participation
  • Assess student progress and provide clear, supportive feedback
  • Collaborate with other ESL instructors, case managers, and program staff to support student goals and address barriers
  • Integrate cultural orientation and life skills into lessons, including job readiness, healthcare navigation, and accessing community resources
  • Maintain accurate attendance, progress notes, and outcomes for program reporting
  • Support additional language development opportunities such as conversation practice and tutoring
  • Participate in professional development and stay current on best practices in adult ESL education

Schedule & Location
  • Classes are held in person at program sites and community partner locations
  • Schedule may include evenings or weekends based on student availability
  • Some local travel between sites may be required

Qualifications
  • Experience teaching ESL, adult education, or a related field
  • Experience working with migrant or refugee populations and an understanding of resettlement challenges
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to adapt instruction for diverse cultural and educational backgrounds
  • Comfort using digital tools to support instruction and learning
  • Ability to speak Dari and/or Pashto strongly preferred

  • Research and identify relevant clubs, social events, and activities within the community, and encourage clients to participate for increased engagement and language practice.
  • Coordinate volunteer-led group activities, including community service projects, recreational events, and English conversation groups tailored to different client needs.
  • Support clients in organizing and attending community gatherings, sports events, or cultural festivals that foster connection to their new community.
  • Assist clients with building their social networks through both formal and informal activities that encourage relationship-building with local residents.
  • Provide ongoing support for clients in overcoming any barriers to participation, including transportation, scheduling, or childcare concerns.

Note: This is a grant a grant funded position with an anticipated end date of 9/29/26.
