Job description

Position Summary

The Yard Dog Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of trailers and containers within the distribution center yard and between nearby company facilities. This role ensures timely trailer placement, supports operational workflow, maintains accurate records, and upholds all safety and regulatory requirements. The Yard Dog Driver works closely with Operations, Transportation, and Yard teams to ensure the smooth flow of equipment and materials throughout the distribution network.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Safely operate a yard truck (yard dog) to move trailers and containers within the distribution center yard.
  • Back trailers into dock doors, stage equipment for loading and unloading, and reposition trailers as business needs require.
  • Transport trailers and containers between the main distribution center and nearby support facilities, up to five (5) miles away, utilizing public roads in compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Conduct pre-trip, post-trip, and daily inspections of yard trucks, trailers, and related equipment.
  • Identify, document, and promptly report equipment defects, maintenance concerns, accidents, or safety hazards.
  • Verify that all equipment is safe, operational, and roadworthy before use.
  • Maintain accurate records of trailer locations, equipment status, inspections, and movement activities.
  • Communicate effectively with Operations, Transportation, and Yard personnel regarding movement requests and equipment availability.
  • Follow established yard management procedures, traffic flow requirements, and company safety policies.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of assigned equipment and work areas.
  • Support operational efficiency by responding promptly to movement requests in a fast-paced distribution environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with all required endorsements.
  • Clean driving record that meets company and insurance eligibility requirements.
  • Ability to safely operate a yard truck and maneuver trailers in tight spaces and around active warehouse and transportation operations.
  • Knowledge of DOT regulations, safe driving practices, and traffic laws applicable to commercial vehicle operation.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with multiple departments.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in a dynamic work environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience operating a yard truck, tractor-trailer, or other commercial vehicles.
  • Experience in a distribution center, warehouse, transportation, or logistics environment.
  • Familiarity with transportation management systems, yard management systems, or electronic logging tools.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, climb, bend, and reach throughout the workday.
  • Ability to enter and exit equipment frequently.
  • Ability to perform visual inspections of equipment and surroundings.
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally.
