What is a Weekend Container Terminal Vessel Planner?

A Weekend Container Terminal Vessel Planner is a logistics professional responsible for organizing and coordinating the loading and unloading of cargo containers from ships at a port terminal, specifically during weekend shifts. They create vessel stowage plans, optimize container placement for efficient handling, and work closely with operations teams to ensure timely turnaround of vessels. Their role is crucial for maintaining smooth terminal operations and minimizing vessel delays, especially during busy or off-peak periods like weekends.

What are the main challenges faced by Weekend Container Terminal Vessel Planners, and how can they be managed effectively?

Weekend Container Terminal Vessel Planners often encounter challenges such as managing unexpected vessel schedule changes, coordinating with various teams during off-peak hours, and efficiently allocating berth and yard resources under tight time constraints. Effective communication with operations, stevedores, and shipping lines is crucial to ensure smooth cargo flow and minimize delays. Being proactive in monitoring ship arrivals and departures, using terminal operating systems efficiently, and quickly adapting to last-minute changes are key strategies for overcoming these challenges and ensuring vessel turnaround targets are met.

Job description

We are recruiting on behalf of a leading container terminal operator based in Oakland, California. This company is one of the primary terminal operators at a major West Coast port and is in the middle of a significant infrastructure modernization program, including recently installed new ship-to-shore crane equipment designed to service the world's largest container vessels.
They are looking to add two Operations Managers to lead the day-to-day supervision of terminal labor and cargo operations.
What You Will Do:
Manage and supervise longshore workers, foremen, supercargoes, and planners across vessel, yard, gate, and rail functions. Make real-time decisions on labor assignments, shift extensions, and equipment needs. Handle discipline, grievances, and labor dispatch in compliance with collective bargaining agreement provisions. Prepare shift productivity reports and coordinate with maintenance and repair. Ensure compliance with hazardous cargo regulations and safety protocols.
What You Bring:
Bachelor's degree in operations, marine administration, transportation, engineering, or equivalent management experience. Two or more years managing union labor under a collective bargaining agreement. Ability to work rotating shifts including nights, weekends, and up to 12-hour shifts. A valid driver's license. Container terminal or port operations experience is a strong plus.
