Weekend Construction Inspector information

What does a weekend construction inspector do?

A Weekend Construction Inspector is responsible for monitoring construction sites during weekends to ensure that all work complies with building codes, safety regulations, and project specifications. Their duties include inspecting ongoing work, identifying potential violations, and documenting progress. They also communicate findings to project managers and may halt work if serious issues are detected. This role is crucial for maintaining consistent oversight and preventing delays or hazards on projects that operate outside standard weekday hours.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend construction inspector?

To thrive as a Weekend Construction Inspector, you need a solid understanding of construction methods, codes, and regulations, often supported by relevant certifications or a background in engineering or construction management. Familiarity with inspection tools, digital reporting systems, and safety compliance technology is typically required. Attention to detail, strong communication, and the ability to work independently are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure that construction projects meet quality and safety standards, even outside regular work hours, minimizing risks and project delays.

What are some typical challenges a weekend construction inspector might face on the job?

Weekend Construction Inspectors often encounter unique challenges such as coordinating with limited on-site personnel, managing inspections with reduced administrative support, and addressing urgent issues that arise outside regular business hours. They must be proactive in communicating with project managers and contractors to ensure work meets safety and quality standards despite the weekend schedule. Flexibility and strong problem-solving skills are key, as inspectors may need to make quick decisions or escalate concerns to keep projects on track.

Build a Safer, Stronger Community
We are hiring a Construction Inspector to oversee the construction of complex projects, from underground storm drain pipelines to basin pump stations. As a special purpose-district serving Fresno, Clovis, and parts of Fresno County, we manage flood control and urban stormwater management for a 400-square-mile service area with a team of 77 professionals. If you are detail-oriented, enjoy fieldwork, and want to contribute to meaningful, hands-on public service, we encourage you to apply.
What You'll Do
Construction Inspectors serve as the District's on-site technical representatives, ensuring every project meets our standards for safety, quality, and long-term performance. You will:
  • Inspect all phases of construction for storm drains, pipelines, pump stations, and other public works projects to ensure full compliance with District standards.
  • Lead field survey activities, review field data, and translate that data into construction drawings.
  • Coordinate work plans and construction schedules and assist with securing necessary permits to keep projects moving forward.
  • Interpret construction plans and drawings, coordinate field and laboratory testing of materials, and verify that the correct materials are used.
  • Prepare reports and correspondence and maintain detailed project records.

Who You Are
  • You value transparency, accountability, integrity, and teamwork.
  • You bring strong coordination and planning skills, and you communicate effectively while remaining calm, objective, and professional in all situations.

Education
  • You have a high school diploma or equivalent (verified during the background process).
  • For Construction Inspector II and III, you also have technical training in engineering, construction drafting, surveying, or water sciences.
  • You may also hold a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Industrial Technology, or related field with a construction focus, which may substitute for some general experience.

  • Construction Inspector II: You have at least three years of experience related to public works construction.
  • Construction Inspector III: You have at least five years of experience related to public works construction.

Growth Within the Inspector Series
  • As a small agency, we offer opportunities to advance within the Construction Inspector series (I-III). Inspectors hired at Level I can progress as they gain skills and experience, with Level III representing the top tier.

  • Play a direct role in improving essential public infrastructure
  • Join a supportive, mission-driven team
