Job description

Description
The Department of Computer Science at Reed College invites applications for an assistant professor tenure stream faculty position in computer systems beginning in the fall of 2027. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in computer science or a closely related field by the time of the appointment and should be committed to excellence in undergraduate teaching and in research. Applicants from any area of computer systems and applications, broadly construed, will be considered (e.g., networks, database systems, security, distributed computing, architecture, operating systems, robotics, etc.). The successful applicant will teach in the core computer science curriculum at all levels, will develop one or more courses in the applicant's area(s) of expertise, and will work to foster a welcoming and engaged community. They will maintain an active research program, providing opportunities for student involvement, and they will advise several year-long senior thesis projects each year. The new hire will teach 5 course units per year over two semesters (3-2), including additional sections or lab sessions as part of the 5 units.
Reed College is a vibrant intellectual community located in Portland, Oregon. Reed students are known for their outstanding intellectual engagement and creativity, and a substantial proportion go on to pursue advanced degrees. Reed believes that this requires a faculty that is actively engaged in cutting-edge research and provides the resources necessary to enable that research, including a generous sabbatical policy, startup and other funding, and salary that is competitive with other institutions that expect and support high-quality research. The college believes that cultural diversity and inclusive education practices are essential to the excellence of our academic program (see https://www.reed.edu/diversity/). Applicants to the position are encouraged to contact Adam Groce (agroce@reed.edu), the chair of the search committee, for further details about the position and the college's computer science program. Information about the position is also posted at https://www.reed.edu/computer-science/faculty-search.html.
Application Instructions
Applicants should submit their applications electronically through the Interfolio service and should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, teaching statement, research statement, and three letters of recommendation. The application should address how the applicant's teaching and scholarship would contribute to Reed's small, selective undergraduate community and help foster a welcoming and inclusive environment in our program.
Applications submitted by October 12, 2026 are guaranteed full consideration, although review of applications will continue until the position is filled. An Equal Opportunity Employer, Reed values diversity and encourages applications from underrepresented groups.
