Job description
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
• Serve as a visible safety presence in the field by conducting routine visits to terminals, docks, river operations, work sites, and other assigned operational locations.
• Work closely with Operations, supervisors, and employees to identify hazards, promote safe work practices, and ensure compliance with Company safety policies and procedures.
• Audit and ensure compliance with Company requirements and regulatory standards.
• Track and maintain statistical data for assigned locations, including proactive safety activities, inspections, audits, and incident reporting.
• Provide initial case management for occupational injuries and illnesses, including transporting employees to and from medical providers, coordinating follow-up care, and monitoring work status until responsibility is transferred or otherwise directed by the Risk or Safety Director.
• Monitor and administer the Company's Drug and Alcohol Policy, including post-incident, reasonable suspicion, random, and return-to-duty testing requirements.
• Assist Operations and Safety Management in investigating incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions and recommend corrective actions.
• Ensure all incidents are reported in accordance with Company policy and submit required documentation within established timeframes.
• Conduct routine field inspections, safety observations, behavioral audits, and environmental assessments at assigned locations.
• Develop, monitor, and follow up on Safety Action Items to ensure timely corrective action.
• Maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, managers, contractors, and customers.
• Participate in a rotating on-call schedule, including nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency response, to provide timely support for incidents, injuries, investigations, and other operational or safety-related events. Must be available to respond to calls and travel to Company locations when necessary.
• Maintain confidentiality of employee, medical, and company information.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum of four (4) years of experience in a safety, health, environmental, or operational safety role within a marine, stevedoring, crane, transportation, or heavy industrial environment is preferred.
Experience working in active field operations is strongly preferred.
SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
• Experience working in marine, stevedoring, crane, terminal, or heavy industrial operations preferred.
• Strong working knowledge of OSHA regulations and industry safety practices.
• Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to build credibility and maintain positive working relationships with field personnel and management.
• Ability to make sound decisions in fast-paced operational environments.
• Ability to investigate incidents and prepare detailed reports.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines.
• Strong observational and problem-solving skills.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and other business applications.
• Ability and willingness to work a rotating on-call schedule and respond to after-hours emergencies, incidents, and operational needs.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The Safety and Training Specialist is expected to spend the majority of the workday in active operational environments while balancing the administrative responsibilities necessary to support the Company's safety and training programs. Duties are performed at marine terminals, docks, river facilities, crane operations, maintenance areas, and other industrial worksites.
Frequent travel between Company facilities is required.
The position routinely works outdoors and is regularly exposed to changing weather conditions, including extreme heat, humidity, cold, rain, wind, and direct sunlight.
The position is regularly exposed to moving cranes, heavy equipment, vessels, forklifts, industrial vehicles, elevated work areas, uneven walking surfaces, noise, dust, vibration, fumes, oils, chemicals, and other hazards commonly associated with marine and industrial operations.
The position requires flexibility to work beyond normal business hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and while participating in a rotating on-call schedule. Incumbents must be available to respond to emergencies and travel to Company locations on short notice.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The physical demands of this position are significant and require the ability to work safely throughout active industrial and marine operations.
The incumbent must be able to:
• Frequently walk long distances throughout terminals, docks, river facilities, and operational work sites.
• Frequently climb ladders, stairs, gangways, elevated platforms, and crane access systems.
• Board vessels, barges, and other floating equipment when necessary.
• Traverse uneven terrain, docks, gravel, steel surfaces, and other industrial walking areas.
• Work outdoors for extended periods in all weather conditions.
• Stand and walk for prolonged periods throughout the workday.
• Frequently bend, kneel, squat, crawl, reach, balance, and climb while conducting inspections and investigations.
• Occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
• Operate a motor vehicle and travel between multiple Company locations.
• Use computers and mobile devices for documentation and reporting.
• Maintain visual awareness and hearing sufficient to recognize workplace hazards and communicate effectively in high-noise environments.
Physical Demand Level: Moderate to Heavy Work requiring the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and frequent physical activity throughout the workday
