Job description

American Battery Technology Company (ABTC) provides technical development and commercialization of domestic, sustainable sourcing of critical battery materials through lithium-ion battery recycling and battery metal extraction technologies for use in batteries that power electric cars, grid storage applications, and consumer electronics and tools. Our first of kind systems produce commercial-scale battery materials thatย areย sold into the battery manufacturing supply chain.
Asย Analyticalย Chemist,ย theย incumbentย helpsย performย allย facetsย ofย laboratory operations andย chemicalย analyses to supportย processย designย & implementationย ofย our proprietary lithium-ion battery recycling processesย and primary resource extraction technologies.ย This candidate will work closely with our engineering organization, our plant operations team,ย and ourย R&D teamย to ensure the successful design, construction,ย and operations of our facilities.ย 

Our pilot plant inย McCarren, Nevadaย isย the first integrated implementation of our multi-step processing train for the full mechanical processing, physical separations, chemical extractions, and production of commercial-scale battery metals that will be resold back into the battery manufacturing supply chain to enact a low-cost, low-environmental impact, and domestically sourced closed-loop circular economy.ย ย This position willย reportย to theย Director of Analytical Services.ย 

Requirements

Perform routineย operation of analytical instrumentationย according toย standardizedย operating proceduresย (SOP),ย including but not limited toย 

  • Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emissions Spectroscopy (ICP-OES)ย 
  • Ion Chromatography (IC)ย 
  • Total Organic Carbon analyzer (TOC)ย 
  • Titrators, pH sensors, and various other benchtopย analytical instrumentationย 
  • Gas Chromatography (GC-FID/MS)ย 

Performย data analysis, validation, and reporting of quality control testing to supportย commercial-scale battery metalsย sold to the battery manufacturing supply chainย includingย 

  • Sample data and analytical results entry in Laboratory Information Management Systemย 
  • Generate Certification of Analyses (CoA) forย final productsย ย 

Help coordinate analytical chemistry lab operations, including but not limited toย 

  • Maintainย adequateย supplies of laboratory consumablesย 
  • Receiveย and processย incoming samples for chemical analysisย 
  • Performย routine maintenanceย and troubleshootingย of analytical instrumentationย 
  • Trainย new analytical chemistry technicalย staff on methods and instrumentationย 

Ensureย aย safe laboratory work environmentย byย adheringย to Good Laboratory Practicesย (GLP)ย includingย 

  • Use ofย Personal Protective Equipmentย (PPE)ย as appropriateย 
  • Uphold laboratoryย hygieneย policies and proceduresย throughย records keeping andย management ofย laboratory wasteย ย 
Minimum Qualifications

A background inย Analytical Chemistry/Chemical Engineeringย withย 3ย or more yearsย of laboratory experienceย operatingย instrumentationย andย performing sampleย preparationย 

  • Organicย analytical instrumentation includingย (GC, HPLC, TOC)ย 
  • Liquid/Liquid Extraction, Solid Phase Extraction,ย Semi-Prep LCย 
  • Inorganic analytical instrumentationย (IC, ICP)ย 
  • Variousย acid-base titrations and measurementsย 
  • Chemical processing background (Oil,ย Gasย & Chemicals, Metals & Mining, Mineral Processing, etc.)ย 
Physical Demands

Lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling activitiesย required to move laboratory equipment and consumables such as instrumentation,ย compressed gas cylinders,ย and dewars.ย 

Positional demands of the jobย such as standing at sample processing and analytical instrumentationย on benchtops and in chemical fume hoodsย as well as sitting at computer workstations processingย analytical data.ย
