What is a Weekend CDL driver?

A Weekend CDL driver is a commercial driver’s license (CDL) holder who primarily works on weekends, transporting goods or passengers. These drivers may work part-time or on a flexible schedule, often for companies that need additional help during busy periods, holidays, or to cover regular drivers’ days off. Weekend CDL jobs can include operating trucks, buses, or other commercial vehicles, and often appeal to those seeking supplemental income or a non-traditional work schedule.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend CDL driver?

To thrive as a Weekend CDL Driver, you need a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), a clean driving record, and a solid understanding of road safety regulations. Familiarity with GPS navigation systems, electronic logging devices (ELDs), and basic vehicle maintenance are crucial technical competencies. Excellent time management, reliability, and strong communication skills help ensure timely deliveries and effective interactions with clients and dispatchers. These abilities are essential for maintaining safety, meeting delivery schedules, and building a trustworthy professional reputation.

What are some common challenges faced by Weekend CDL drivers, and how can they be managed?

Weekend CDL drivers often encounter challenges such as navigating heavy weekend traffic, adjusting to irregular sleep schedules, and managing time to meet tight delivery deadlines. Effective communication with dispatch and planning routes in advance can help mitigate traffic delays. Additionally, maintaining a healthy work-life balance and practicing good sleep hygiene are important for alertness and safety on the road. Leveraging technology for route optimization and staying informed about traffic conditions can also make weekend hauls smoother.

Job description

CDL-A Flatbed Steel Hauler

Run dedicated stainless-steel flatbed freight with organized backhaul planning, weekend home time, and weekly earnings of $2,000 to $2,100 in this CDL-A driving position.

Pay: $2,000 to $2,100 per week | Home Time: Home every weekend with a 34-hour reset Freight: Dedicated stainless-steel flatbed with backhaul loads | Experience: Minimum 6 months of flatbed experience required Location: Jackson, MS 39201

Role: CDL-A Flatbed Truck Driver

Compensation: Weekly pay of $2,000 to $2,100. Qualified drivers are eligible for a $5,000 sign-on bonus.

Equipment: Assigned newer-model Kenworth T680 tractors paired with 2025 Extreme 48-foot flatbed trailers equipped with 12 winches, straps, and two six-foot drop tarps.

Routes & Home Time: Drivers haul dedicated stainless-steel freight from a customer near Calvert, Alabama, before moving available backhaul freight that helps position the truck for the next outbound load. Weekend home time with a 34-hour reset supports a predictable work schedule while maintaining strong weekly earning potential.

Drivers stay with the same trailer throughout each trip. Freight is primarily live loaded and live unloaded, giving experienced flatbed drivers a consistent operating routine instead of drop-and-hook freight.

Freight: Outbound loads include smaller stainless-steel coils and flat stainless-steel sheets. Approximately 75% of shipments require tarping with lighter six-foot drop tarps designed for this account. Tarp pay is included as part of the account's overall compensation program.

Orientation & Benefits: Orientation is held Monday through Thursday and pays $100 per day. Hotel accommodations, meals, and travel arrangements are provided. Qualified drivers are eligible for a $5,000 sign-on bonus.

Driver Qualifications

Valid CDL-A license required Minimum one year of OTR experience within the last five years Minimum six months of flatbed experience Steel-hauling experience required Current coil-hauling certification required Experience with tarping and load securement required Acceptable driving record required
