Job description

TITLE: BUS DRIVER

CLASSIFICATION: PART-TIME, NON-EXEMPT

REPORTS TO: HEAD OF ACADEMICS

DEPARTMENT: BUS DRIVERS


Overview of Position:

Under the general supervision of the Head of Academics, the Bus Driver has the primary responsibility for ensuring the health, safety and welfare of the children, staff and volunteers during bus transportation to and from the school and on field trips. It is also the role of the Bus Driver to: guarantee that the bus is clean and in proper working condition at all times; determine and follow safe and efficient bus routes; ensure all children are in age appropriate child safety restraints; maintain all transportation records required by the program; ensure bus evacuation drills are held annually; and, evacuate children in case of emergency.


Essential Duties

The following expectations are for the Bus Driver at Calvin Christian School.

  • Ensures the safety and well-being of children and adults being transported to and from the program and on field trips.
  • Helps coordinate for the annual state inspection of the bus(as); assures, with prior approval, purchases and/or repairs are made pursuant to state inspection.
  • Completes a comprehensive written inspection of the bus prior to trips, reporting any conditions of concern to the Building Engineer, or delegated staff person, before transporting children.
  • Arranges for and ensures completion of routine maintenance of the bus (e.g., oil change); transporting the bus to and from maintenance and/or repair facilities.
  • Ensures that the bus always has sufficient fuel.
  • Keeps the bus clean and free of debris; follows other bus cleaning procedures.
  • Routinely inventories bus emergency and first aid supplies and equipment, reports needs to the Office Administrator, or delegated staff person.
  • Prepares aides and children for bus drills and ensures bus evacuation drills are held at least annually. Documents all drills in writing.
  • Assists in other transportation training of bus aides, teachers, children and volunteers.
  • In case of accidents/emergencies, evacuates children according to written and practiced procedures.
  • In the event of an accident, assures that medical emergency procedures are followed; completes a written accident report as required by delegate's procedure and other authorities.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned.


Education

  • Possess a current Commercial Driver's License (CDL), hold a current School Bus Driver's Permit.


Experience

  • Successful experience as a School Bus Driver preferred.

  • Must have and profess a personal and mature commitment to faith in Jesus Christ and affirm the school's statement of faith/basis of instruction and mission statement.
  • Must believe, without reservation, and actively support the school's Statement of Faith, Foundational Beliefs, and mission statement; possess a strong, clear Christian testimony; demonstrate a mature, godly spirit as a person of faith and prayer.

Required Hours

This position is a part-time hourly position and is not eligible for any benefits at this time. Hourly rate ranges between $16-$19 (commensurate with experience). General availability for field trips (morning/afternoon), athletics, and other events is desired.


Additional Requirements

  • Ability to pass an annual Illinois School Bus Driver's physical which includes a tuberculosis test and drug test.
  • Must be able to comply with background check, including fingerprints, as required by the agency and/or Illinois Licensing Agency.
  • Regular access to a reliable vehicle; have a valid Illinois driver's license and vehicle insurance.
  • Ability to present a positive image of the organization to members of the community.
  • Visual and auditory acuity within professionally determined normal ranges, with correction if needed.
  • Must be free of communicable diseases and breathing impairments.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate the bus, conduct pre-trip inspections, and clean the bus.
  • Must have effective organizational, problem solving, and time management skills.
  • Ability to learn and comprehend information from Procedures Manuals and other materials.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow traffic signs required.
  • Must be able to physically move through the bus, center and classrooms.
  • Ability to lift 55 pounds is required.
  • Ability to perform responsibilities under pressure and in cases of accidents or other emergencies.

Successful experience working as an effective member of a team is desirable. Experience successfully working with a culturally diverse staff & clients is also desirable.


Working Conditions

Tasks that involve infrequent exposure to blood, bodily fluids or tissues. Risk involved with travel on main highway, side streets and rural roads during business travel, including evenings and weekends. Tasks that involve handling implements or utensils, use of public or shared bathroom facilities or telephones and personal contacts are Category III tasks. Possible exposure to communicable diseases. This job involves sitting for long periods as well as stooping, squatting, lifting, carrying, pushing and climbing. Able to work a flexible schedule. Must be able to travel, enter, and exit a vehicle without assistance and withstand exposure to adverse weather conditions.
