What is a weekend assembler?

Weekend Assemblers are manufacturing or production workers who are scheduled to work primarily on weekends, often in assembly line settings. Their main responsibilities include putting together parts or products, following detailed instructions, and ensuring quality standards are met. Weekend Assemblers help companies maintain continuous production by covering shifts that fall outside the standard Monday-to-Friday workweek. This role is ideal for individuals seeking part-time work or those who prefer weekend schedules.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend assembler, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Assembler, you need manual dexterity, attention to detail, and a basic understanding of mechanical assembly processes, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with hand tools, power tools, assembly line equipment, and sometimes basic computer systems is typically required. Reliability, teamwork, and effective time management are standout soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for maintaining production quality, meeting deadlines, and ensuring a smooth workflow during weekend shifts.

What are some common challenges faced by weekend assemblers, and how can they be addressed?

Weekend Assemblers often face the challenge of adapting to condensed production schedules and coordinating with teams that primarily work during the week. Effective communication with weekday staff is crucial to ensure smooth handoffs and avoid misunderstandings about ongoing projects. Additionally, weekend shifts may require working with limited supervision or resources, so being proactive and detail-oriented can help resolve issues independently. Building strong relationships with supervisors and peers can also foster a supportive work environment and facilitate problem-solving.

Job description

A Day in the Life
As an Assembler 2 at MKS Instruments, you will play a key role in building high-quality electronic and electro-mechanical products that support our customers around the world. Working from detailed work instructions, drawings, and specifications, you'll assemble complex products, identify opportunities for process improvements, and collaborate with Engineering, Quality, and Manufacturing to ensure products are built accurately and delivered on time.
You Will Make an Impact By:
  • Complex Assembly: Assemble electronic, electro-mechanical, and mechanical products, including wiring, component installation, and final assemblies while following detailed work instructions and engineering documentation.
  • Quality & Workmanship: Inspect your work throughout the assembly process, identify discrepancies, and ensure products meet quality standards before moving to the next operation.
  • Documentation & Process Compliance: Accurately complete production documentation, record non-conformances when needed, and follow established manufacturing procedures, drawings, and revision-controlled work instructions.
  • Continuous Improvement: Support process improvements by identifying assembly challenges, providing feedback on documentation, and working with Engineering and Manufacturing to improve quality, efficiency, and manufacturability.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Engineering, Quality, and fellow production team members to resolve production issues, support new product introductions, and meet production schedules.
  • Workplace Organization & Safety: Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area while properly caring for tools, equipment, and materials in accordance with company safety and 6S practices.

Skills You Bring:
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience: 2+ years of experience in electronic, electro-mechanical, or mechanical assembly in a manufacturing environment.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in reading assembly drawings, work instructions, and schematics; experience with hand tools.
  • Problem Solving: Ability to identify assembly issues, troubleshoot basic production challenges, and recommend practical solutions.
  • Attention to Detail: Strong focus on accuracy, quality, and workmanship while consistently meeting production expectations.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to communicate effectively with team members, Engineering, Quality, and supervisors to resolve issues and support production goals.

Preferred Skills:
  • IPC-610 Certification
  • Experience assembling complex electronic products.
  • Familiarity with electronic production documentation.
  • Continuous improvement or Lean manufacturing experience.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
Ability to sit or stand for extended periods, perform repetitive assembly tasks, use hand tools and soldering equipment, and lift to 50 lbs. Ability to work with small components requires fine motor skills and visual attention to detail.
Compensation and Benefits:
Pay Range: $16.70 - 27.83 per hour. This range is a good faith estimate of the expected salary range for this position, based on a wide range of factors including qualifications, experience and training, operational and business needs and other considerations permitted by law. At MKS, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for the role.
Bonus: This position is eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, in an amount to be determined by MKS [or as applicable].
Benefits: MKS offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance coverage (medical, dental and vision), 401(k) with company match, life and disability insurance, 11 paid holidays, sick time, 15 paid vacation days, [6 weeks fully paid] parental leave, adoption assistance and tuition reimbursement [and for participation in any stock programs, signing bonus, etc.].
