Job description

The Lower School Art Assistant supports the art program by preparing materials, organizing the art room, assisting students during classes, and helping install student artwork throughout the school. This part-time role (16 hours per week, occasionally up to 20 during special events or installations) provides hands-on support to the Art Teacher and contributes to the success of regular instruction and community events such as the biennial Spring Art Show. Preferred Work days are Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and organize materials for art projects, including mixing paints, cutting paper, matting artwork, prepping clay, and maintaining studio supplies.
  • Assist in classroom instruction by supporting students in their art-making and offering guidance with materials.
  • Help maintain the cleanliness and organization of the art room and ensure proper care of tools and equipment.
  • Photograph student work and maintain a visual archive for the art class page or displays.
  • Support the installation of student art throughout the Lower School, including preparing and hanging displays.
  • Provide assistance with the setup and installation of the biannual Lower School Spring Art Show in the All-School Gallery.
  • Provide occasional subbing support for days when the art teacher is sick or taking personal leave.

Experience and Qualifications:

Required:

  • Background in studio art or a related field (formal art education not required).
  • Experience working with children, preferably in an educational or artistic setting.
  • Familiarity with a variety of artistic media and tools.
  • Flexibility, patience, and enthusiasm for supporting young artists.
  • Comfort with basic technology (e.g., digital photography, file sharing, photo editing).
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, creative environment.

Preferred:

  • Experience assisting in a classroom or studio setting.
  • Familiarity with display and exhibition practices.

Education and/or Professional Credentials:

  • Coursework or degree in Fine Arts, Studio Art, or a related field preferred.
