CLASSIFICATION SPECIFICATION
CLASSIFICATION TITLE: ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER
PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
The purpose of this classification is to protect and serve the community against stray animals, dog bites and rabies infections. Receives and responds to nuisance complaints, neglect complaints, and bite calls. Writes citations, reports, and conducts investigations as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Protects and serves the community against stray animals, dog bites and rabies infections.
Receives and responds to nuisance complaints, neglect complaints, and bite calls; traps and impounds stray animals.
Writes citations, reports, and conducts investigations as required; investigates complaints involving abuse or neglect.
Works to educate the public on animal control related issues.
Cleans cages and cares for impounded animals.
Attends court hearings to provide testimony and assist in prosecuting related cases.
Performs routine clerical tasks to include maintaining files, preparing reports and documents, and collecting fees.
Operates a personal computer, printer, copier, fax, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, database, or other system software.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Requires a high school diploma or GED with vocational or technical school training in animal handling and animal code enforcement with a minimum of one year of experience working with animals; or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must possess a valid drivers license and successful pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen. Secure/Non-Secure or higher certification through the Georgia Department of Corrections.
Must be available for on-call duty as assigned; including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
When on-call, must be able to arrive on the scene within thirty minutes of call.

Data Utilization: Requires the ability to compile, assemble, copy, record and/or transcribe data according to a prescribed schema or plan. Includes judging whether readily observable functional, structural or compositional characteristics are similar to or divergent from prescribed standards, procedures or routines.
Human Interaction: Requires the ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others regarding the application of procedures and standards to specific situations.
Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information.
Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. May include counting, recording of counts, and basic measuring.
Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.
Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.
ADA COMPLIANCE
Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials in excess of 50 pounds.
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, hazardous materials, toxic agents, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, violence, disease, pathogenic substances, or rude/irate customers.
