Position Information Classification Title Farmworker-Ranch II FLSA Non-Exempt FTE 1.00 Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of related experience Preferred Qualifications Position Summary Working closely with UGA research and Extension programs, this position will assist with forage production and implementation of research trials at the Alapaha Range Grazing Station. General responsibilities include providing support for forage production, assisting with beef cattle care, and supporting research activities. This individual will be accountable for communicating directly with research teams and following research protocols. The position will promote the image of the University by maintaining the herd and farm in a neat and attractive manner. The employee will report to the Animal Science Farm Manager, who is responsible for farm operations. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
  • Knowledge of forage and row-crop management practices, including establishment, maintenance, and harvesting.
  • Ability to maintain the necessary research and beef management records as specified by the Animal Science Sr. Farm Manager and Research Scientists.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to utilize digital recordkeeping programs, texting, and email.
  • Ability to acquire all Beef Quality Assurance certifications and a Georgia Pesticide Applicators license.
Physical Demands
  • Lift, push, and carry up to 75 pounds.
  • Work in environmental extremes and outdoor conditions.
  • Work varied schedules according to the needs of the farm, including some evenings, weekends, and holidays to ensure safety/maintenance of the livestock and forages.
  • Driving as needed to perform duties.

Duties/Responsibilities Duties/Responsibilities Farm Management and Research Support
  • Coordinate with team to cover feeding and routine animal care on scheduled weekends and on holidays.
  • Build and repair fences, grow forage crops, and care for animals involved in research trials.
  • Curate records such as fertilizer and crop protection applications, vaccinations, and irrigation events.
  • Transport, work, load, and unload animals.
  • Maintain, prepare, and clean the beef and metabolism barns.
  • Responsible for proper maintenance and appearance of the farm, animal handling facilities, and agricultural machinery.
Percentage of time 70 Duties/Responsibilities Routine Animal care
  • Provide day-to-day care and observation of livestock.
  • Provide immediate corrective action when animal health is in jeopardy.
  • Maintain up-to-date health records for livestock.
  • Maintain and provide routine vaccination, deworming, and health programs.
Percentage of time 20 Duties/Responsibilities Miscellaneous
  • Provide effective communication within and outside of the UGA system.
  • Coordinate with supervisor in planning farm visits by stakeholders.
  • Comply with all UGA/USG policies, including record keeping, timekeeping, training, etc.
