Job description

Job Title: Field Engineer – Greenfield Power Plant and Data Center Projects

Job Description

The Field Engineer will work on site at a new greenfield power generation facility that ties into a data center in Bowling Green, Ohio and similar heavy industrial projects across the Midwest. This role focuses on the construction phase of EPC power plant projects, supporting civil, mechanical, electrical, and piping activities. You will partner closely with project management, trade teams, and subcontractors to maintain a strong safety culture, keep projects on schedule and on budget, and ensure high-quality execution on large-scale turbine and battery energy storage system installations.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and actively promote a strong safety culture on site, ensuring all work complies with safety standards and procedures.
  • Support the Project Manager in overseeing smaller projects and defined scopes within larger EPC power plant and industrial builds.
  • Review and understand contract terms, conditions, and scope to ensure work is executed in alignment with project requirements.
  • Track materials, production metrics, and project costs, providing accurate data and reports for Project Manager review and approval.
  • Assist in planning, coordinating, and facilitating subcontractor activities across electrical, mechanical, civil, and process piping disciplines.
  • Help maintain and update the project schedule, identifying potential delays and contributing to mitigation plans.
  • Perform basic estimating, including quantity takeoffs and solicitation of quotes from vendors and subcontractors.
  • Provide onsite administrative support, including documentation, reporting, and coordination with the home office.
  • Assist with quality assurance and quality control activities, including test protocols, inspections, and verification of installation standards.
  • Collaborate with trades (self-performed crews and contractors) to resolve field issues and support constructability in a multi‑discipline environment.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings and construction plans to guide field execution and verify installed work.
  • Use project management software and tools to document progress, manage information, and support decision-making.
  • Communicate clearly and regularly with the Project Manager, site leadership, and field teams regarding project status, issues, and next steps.
  • Support the integration of turbines, generators, and battery energy storage systems (BESS) within the power generation facility.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts on site, sharing lessons learned and helping refine processes for future projects.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum 3+ years of experience as a Field Engineer or in a similar role focused on the constructability of heavy industrial or power plant projects.
  • Background working for an owner, EPC, or general contractor on large industrial or power generation projects.
  • Experience overseeing subcontractors in one or more disciplines, with strong preference for electrical and mechanical; civil and process piping experience is also valuable.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to coordinate effectively with Project Managers, site leadership, trades, and subcontractors.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting construction drawings, plans, and specifications.
  • Experience using project management software or related digital tools to track progress, manage documentation, and support project controls.
  • Ability to remain on a project site away from home for extended periods, typically rotating home every 4–6 weeks.
  • Willingness to work extended hours, including the person and weekends as needed to meet project deadlines.
  • Solid understanding of construction management principles in industrial plant builds, including scheduling, cost tracking, and material management.
  • Familiarity with power plant environments, turbines, MEP systems, gas and turbine installations, and industrial construction practices.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience on greenfield power generation projects, particularly facilities supplying power to data centers.
  • Exposure to projects involving aero-turbines, generators, and battery energy storage systems (BESS).
  • Background in industrial plant builds with significant civil, underground, mechanical, and electrical scopes.
  • Ability to support basic estimating, quantity takeoffs, and solicitation of quotes from vendors and subcontractors.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with tight schedules and high manhour volumes.
  • Interest in long-term career growth, including progression into a Project Engineer or Project Manager role over time (often 5+ years).
  • Adaptability to move from project to project, with typical durations ranging from 6–18 months.
  • Capacity to work collaboratively within a close-knit field team culture that emphasizes hands-on support and mutual accountability.

Work Environment

This role is fully site-based at large power generation and heavy industrial projects, starting with a multi‑year power plant project supplying a data center in Bowling Green, Ohio. The facility includes a mix of turbines and battery energy storage systems, with all major disciplines present on site: civil, mechanical, electrical, and extensive piping work. The project involves approximately 200–260 MW of generation using aero‑turbines, generators on the back of turbines, and BESS installations, all constructed on a roughly 20‑acre lot. Work is organized in an assembly‑line style process with multiple turbines of different manufacturers and sizes, plus about 30 miles of pipeline and substantial civil and underground work. The typical schedule is six days per week, about 10 hours per day (6x10s), with the expectation of working the person and weekends as needed during peak phases. Projects are located across the country, with a strong concentration in Wisconsin and the broader Midwest, and Field Engineers work primarily from site trailers and field offices at compressor stations and power plant sites. Project durations generally range from 6 to 12 months, with some multi‑year efforts, and Field Engineers move on to new projects as each assignment concludes. Travel is a regular part of the role, and the company supports trips home by covering mileage or reasonable flights, typically aiming for a trip home once a month or every other month depending on project demands. New engineers join a structured training program and are paired with senior Project Managers and teams, beginning with focused responsibilities such as material management before progressing to broader scopes. The field organization includes multiple Project Engineers per site, along with construction management, quality, and safety professionals routinely present on site, while Project Managers are based in the home office and make periodic site visits. Field Engineers receive practical tools and support, including a laptop and allowances for a truck and cell phone. The culture emphasizes strong retention, hands-on training, and a team environment where field leaders operate like a small family, offering clear pathways to advance into project management roles over time, along with paid time off, holidays, and performance-based bonuses.
