Ophthalmology Cataract/Glaucoma Opportunity in Birmingham, AL

You've built the skill set-now step into a high-volume, referral-driven ophthalmology practice where your glaucoma and cataract expertise is truly needed. This is a full-time Ophthalmology (Glaucoma/Cataract) opportunity with strong surgical volume and a clear runway to a busy schedule. If you're looking for a practice that values co-management, efficient clinic support, and room to grow, let's talk.

Practice Overview

  • You'll join an established ophthalmology group with 8 ophthalmologists, including retina and cornea support
  • Referral-driven glaucoma and cataract practice with strong optometric co-management and Central Alabama reach
  • Procedural mix includes advanced glaucoma care, MIGS, complex cataracts, and tertiary referrals
  • Blocked OR time available; typical surgical volume runs 6-8 cases/week with strong cataract throughput

Schedule

  • 4 clinic days per week; office hours typically Mon-Thu 8:00a-5:00p and Fri 8:00a-4:00p
  • Average clinic volume of 30-40 patients/day with dedicated tech support and diagnostics
  • No ER call; minimal trauma call responsibilities
  • Cover 2-3 office locations with a realistic ramp-up to full volume over about a year

Compensation & Benefits

  • Employed position with base salary starting at 400,000-450,000 (negotiable) plus production incentives
  • Collections-based incentive structure (35% after 2.5x salary threshold)
  • Potential sign-on bonus up to 50,000 and relocation assistance (both negotiable)
  • Benefits include health insurance, 401(k), disability/life insurance, malpractice coverage, 20 days PTO, and CME time/allowance (tail coverage is physician's responsibility upon departure)

Candidate Requirements

  • MD/DO with fellowship training in Glaucoma (required)
  • Strong cataract surgery skills and comfort with advanced glaucoma management/MIGS
  • Not considering residents; looking for a surgeon ready to step into a busy referral practice
  • Collaborative approach with optometrists and referring physicians; interest in long-term growth and leadership

Community & Location Highlights

  • Live and work in the Birmingham metro with a strong medical community and broad regional draw
  • Multiple neighborhood options-from walkable city living to suburban communities with well-regarded schools
  • Plenty to do year-round: dining, college sports, outdoor trails, and quick weekend getaways
  • Convenient access to a commercial airport and an overall cost of living that can stretch your income further than many major metros
