Job description

Duration: 6+ Months (possible extension)

Job Summary

  • We are seeking a skilled and dependable Airport Maintenance Worker to support the Operations & Maintenance Department at Orlando Melbourne International Airport. This position is responsible for performing a wide range of maintenance, repair, and facility support activities to ensure airport buildings, grounds, and operational equipment remain safe, functional, and compliant with applicable regulations and industry standards.
  • The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in building maintenance, mechanical repairs, plumbing, carpentry, electrical work, and general facility upkeep. This role requires the ability to work independently, respond to maintenance requests, perform preventative maintenance, and operate safely in a fast-paced airport environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Airport Foreman with daily maintenance activities, including painting, plumbing, carpentry, and basic electrical work.
  • Inspect airport buildings, facilities, and infrastructure to identify maintenance and repair needs.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and corrective repairs on airport facilities and equipment.
  • Operate pressure washers, steam cleaners, vacuum equipment, and various hand and power tools.
  • Maintain and repair irrigation systems, fencing, roofing, walls, floors, fixtures, and related airport property.
  • Inspect leaking roofs and perform temporary repairs as needed.
  • Assemble, repair, and maintain airport equipment and operational assets.
  • Respond promptly to maintenance requests and facility service calls.
  • Conduct airfield inspections and support airport operational readiness.
  • Operate airport vehicles and equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Assist with custodial duties, furniture moving, welding, and other facility maintenance tasks as assigned.
  • Follow OSHA regulations, airport safety procedures, and FAA security requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in building maintenance, facilities maintenance, or related field.
  • Valid Florida Driver's License.
  • Ability to pass a federal fingerprint-based criminal background check.
  • Ability to attend FAA Security Standards training and successfully pass required testing.
  • Ability to work various shifts, including days, nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-outs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in custodial services, plumbing, mechanical maintenance, electrical systems, or HVAC.
  • Previous airport, aviation, industrial, or facilities maintenance experience.
  • Experience working with baggage handling systems and passenger boarding bridges.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of building and grounds maintenance methods, materials, and equipment.
  • Understanding of electrical, mechanical, HVAC, and air conditioning systems.
  • Knowledge of OSHA safety standards and safe work practices.
  • Familiarity with airport operational environments and aviation safety procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams and technical documents.
  • Knowledge of two-way aviation radio communications and phonetic alphabet procedures.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair specialized airport equipment.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with airport personnel, tenants, contractors, and coworkers.
  • Ability to respond quickly and effectively during emergency situations.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform physically demanding work in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, squat, kneel, climb ladders, and lift heavy equipment.
  • Ability to use hand tools and power tools safely and effectively.
  • Ability to work outdoors in hot, humid, rainy, and nighttime conditions.
  • Ability to work on uneven surfaces and around active airport operations.
  • Ability to distinguish colors, read labels, signs, and technical documentation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
