Flies the County helicopter on emergency medical missions and medical inter-facility transport missions, to provide flight support to other County Divisions, Departments and agencies, and to provide professional, effective, safe and efficient public service assistance to the public.

• Pilots assigned aircraft as needed to provide emergency medical services and medical evacuations; ensures aircraft readiness at all times.
• While assigned as the air ambulance duty pilot, supervises crew on flight operations of the EMS aircraft.
• Review duty roster; conducts pilot shift change briefings with preceding shift pilots.
• Responds to dispatch calls for aircraft services to support ground units performing emergency/medical evacuation and Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
• Compile mission, flight, and destination details; enters mission data in departmental computer log; makes weather assessments via briefings; determines fuel requirements for operation.
• Configures aircraft to accommodate operation and load requirements; calculates weight and balance data prior to each leg of each flight.
• Prepares a flight plan prior to each mission; evaluates and selects flight routes and landing sites giving consideration to weather, hazards and conditions, other air traffic, weight, range, and other navigational aids
• Performs pre-flight and post-flight inspection of aircraft, equipment and systems in accordance with FAA regulations; directs physical loading of aircraft; moves helicopter in/out of hangar.
• Conducts required crew and passenger briefings; communicates effectively and coherently over flight control and police/fire/EMS radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications.
• Files, opens and closes flight plans with appropriate authorities; reads and interprets Notices to Airmen (NOTAM), aviation maps, aeronautical charts, sectionals and charts.
• Operates the aircraft in accordance with federal, state, and local aviation regulation, policies, and procedures; performs aerial navigation; assists with landings in congested areas.
• Operates, interprets and evaluates various aircraft related gauges, sensors and instruments; reacts to and performs required action for caution/warning indicators; performs maintenance test flights and ground run operations.
• Conducts aircraft and landing zone security; inspects ramp area for debris; inspects, services, and/or schedules maintenance of landing platform and ground power unit.
• Communicates aircraft maintenance issues to mechanic staff; locates, troubleshoots, records and reports maintenance discrepancies; assists mechanic with aircraft maintenance; notifies appropriate personnel of aircraft change of status as appropriate.
• Manages aircraft refueling operation; checks all fluids, air pressure, and tires; services onboard oil and oxygen systems; performs routine hangar service and maintenance as needed.
• Cleans aircraft; maintains hangar, offices, and the appearance and condition of aircraft.
• Reviews and maintains aircraft logbooks for airworthiness; records aviation updates in aeronautical charts, flight manuals, and publications as necessary.
• Conducts training as required for EMS and outside agencies as it relates to landing zone setup, safety, and security; reports and sends documentation to Chief Pilot on training conducted.
• Maintains current aircraft manuals, FAA regulations, policies and procedures, employee handbooks, various aviation charts and maps and related material for reference and/or review; completes helicopter/aircraft logs and worksheets; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations.
• Attends shift and flight safety meetings, seminars, and specialized/update and in-service training sessions as required to maintain knowledge of departmental and county operations, to promote improved job performance, and to maintain knowledge of changing policies, procedures, codes, and laws; continually updates aircraft license and training.

Prepares and/or receives a variety of forms, logs, requests, records, reports, correspondence, and other documents associated with daily responsibilities of this position; reviews, completes, processes, approves, forwards, maintains, and/or takes other action as appropriate; prepares and maintains files and records.

• Cooperates with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies and its officers or representatives when activities are related to investigations within county jurisdiction.
• Operates a personal computer, printer, calculator, copy and facsimile machines, telephone, or other equipment as necessary to complete administrative functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software.

• High school degree or GED equivalent required.
• Minimum of 3,000 total flight hours with a minimum of 2,500 helicopter flight hours (includes 1,500 hours Pilot in Command (PIC) in helicopter; 500 hours rotor wing turbine time; 500 hours of cross-country flight time, a minimum of 100 hours of which were at night; 50 hours helicopter time within the preceding twelve (12) months. Flight hours must be verifiable through reliable documentation.
• Five (5) years in commercial rotorcraft aviation, at least one (1) year of Helicopter Air Ambulance (HAA) experience is preferred; no FAA certificate action within 5 years is required.
• Must be able to report to work within an hour from notice to report.
• Fingerprinting required.
• Post-offer drug screening in accordance with the following regulations is required: FAA 14 CFR Part 135; DOT 49 CFR Part 40; and FAA 14 CFR Part 120.

• Salary offers above the minimum pay grade may be considered based on qualifications.
• Essential Employees may be required to work during an undeclared or declared emergency. The County’s Administrative Office will determine who will be required to work on an incident-by-incident basis.
