Weekend Aerial Mapping Pilot information

What is a weekend aerial mapping pilot?

Weekend Aerial Mapping Pilots are professional pilots who specialize in operating aircraft equipped with mapping equipment, such as cameras or LiDAR sensors, primarily during weekends. Their main responsibility is to fly over designated areas to capture high-resolution aerial imagery or spatial data for use in creating maps, conducting surveys, or supporting environmental and infrastructure projects. These pilots must have a valid commercial pilot's license and often work for mapping companies, government agencies, or research organizations. The role requires precision flying, attention to safety protocols, and an understanding of geospatial data collection technologies.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a weekend aerial mapping pilot?

To thrive as a Weekend Aerial Mapping Pilot, you need a commercial pilot's license, strong navigation skills, and knowledge of aerial survey procedures. Familiarity with GPS mapping systems, specialized camera equipment, and flight planning software is typically required. Excellent situational awareness, attention to detail, and effective communication are important soft skills for this role. These skills ensure the safe, accurate, and efficient collection of aerial data during time-sensitive weekend operations.

What challenges do weekend aerial mapping pilots face and how can they be managed?

Weekend Aerial Mapping Pilots often encounter challenges such as unpredictable weather conditions, strict flight schedules, and the need to maintain precise flight paths for data accuracy. Managing these challenges requires strong pre-flight planning, close coordination with ground teams, and adaptability to changing circumstances. Additionally, effective communication with air traffic control and ongoing training in aerial mapping technology help ensure successful data collection and safe operations.

What is the difference between Weekend Aerial Mapping Pilot vs Drone Survey Pilot?

Work EnvironmentOutdoor, on-location, often in remote areasOutdoor, on-location, often in remote areas
Industry UsageMapping, surveying, construction, agricultureSurveying, construction, environmental assessment
Job FocusCapturing aerial imagery for mapping projectsConducting aerial surveys and data collection

Both roles require FAA Part 107 certification and involve outdoor drone operation in similar environments. The main difference is that Weekend Aerial Mapping Pilots focus specifically on capturing imagery for mapping purposes, while Drone Survey Pilots may perform broader surveying tasks. Understanding these distinctions helps job seekers identify the right role based on their skills and interests.

Job description

Land Surveyor | RLS w/Drone License – Phoenix, AZ (Full-Time)

Cooper Aerial Surveys is an Arizona-based aerial mapping and land surveying firm seeking an experienced Registered Land Surveyor (RLS) with drone/UAS experience to join our Phoenix team. This is a full-time, in-office/field position for someone who knows their way around real projects, can operate independently, and takes pride in doing things right.

This role involves fieldwork and project support on ALTA, Topographic, Construction Staking, Boundary, and aerial mapping projects. The ideal candidate is comfortable both in the field and around technology — including drone operations, survey equipment, and coordination with project teams. You’ll often work independently but also collaborate with crews, pilots, CAD staff, and clients. We’re looking for someone reliable, professional, and easy to work with — competence and attitude both matter here.

Requirements

  • Active Arizona Registered Land Surveyor (RLS) license preferred (or ability to obtain Arizona reciprocity)
  • FAA Part 107 Drone License required
  • 5+ years of land surveying field experience
  • 3+ years flying Drones for survey work
  • Experience with drone/UAS data collection and mission planning
  • Ability to communicate clearly with superintendents, contractors, clients, and project teams
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D (required)
  • Trimble Business Center experience is a plus
  • Strong understanding of land surveying techniques, principles, boundary law, and survey standards
  • Experience operating GPS, robotic total stations, and related survey equipment
  • Proven work history, strong work ethic, and team-first mindset
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage your own work
  • Having your own equipment is a plus (if compatible with our resources)

Equipment & Training

Cooper Aerial uses Trimble robotic and GPS equipment along with drone/UAS platforms for aerial mapping and data collection. Experience with Trimble workflows, photogrammetry, LiDAR, or aerial mapping is a plus, but we’re willing to train the right person with a strong surveying background and willingness to learn.
