What is a Weekend 3D Designer?

Weekend 3D Designers are professionals who specialize in creating three-dimensional models, visualizations, and graphics, typically working on a part-time or freelance basis during weekends. They use software like Blender, 3ds Max, or Maya to design models for industries such as gaming, animation, architecture, or product design. These designers often collaborate remotely with clients or teams to complete projects that require flexible scheduling or supplemental support outside of standard business hours.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a Weekend 3D Designer?

To thrive as a Weekend 3D Designer, you need strong proficiency in 3D modeling, rendering, and animation, often backed by a degree or certification in design or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as Blender, Autodesk 3ds Max, Maya, or Cinema 4D is typically required. Creativity, time management, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for producing high-quality work on tight schedules and collaborating with clients or teams remotely. These skills ensure the designer can deliver compelling, technically accurate visuals efficiently, meeting client expectations and project deadlines.

The ideal candidate will have advanced hands-on experience with Autodesk Inventor and working knowledge of nested CAM software programs such as SigmaNEST.

The role works closely with production, fabrication, purchasing, and project teams to convert customer and production requirements into complete, manufacturable design packages. The position requires strong attention to detail, practical problem-solving skills, and the ability to support design revisions, engineering changes, and manufacturing improvements.

  • Work with internal teams to clarify requirements, resolve design details, and support practical engineering solutions.
  • Assist with material takeoffs, BOM accuracy, and documentation needed for purchasing and production planning.
  • Recommend practical design improvements that improve fit, function, manufacturability, material utilization, or ease of fabrication.
  • Perform other design, drafting, engineering support, and documentation duties as assigned.

  • Strong understanding of material properties, sheet metal fabrication, and practical manufacturing methods.

Preferred:
