Weekend 3D Designer information

What is a Weekend 3D Designer?

Weekend 3D Designers are professionals who specialize in creating three-dimensional models, visualizations, and graphics, typically working on a part-time or freelance basis during weekends. They use software like Blender, 3ds Max, or Maya to design models for industries such as gaming, animation, architecture, or product design. These designers often collaborate remotely with clients or teams to complete projects that require flexible scheduling or supplemental support outside of standard business hours.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a Weekend 3D Designer?

To thrive as a Weekend 3D Designer, you need strong proficiency in 3D modeling, rendering, and animation, often backed by a degree or certification in design or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as Blender, Autodesk 3ds Max, Maya, or Cinema 4D is typically required. Creativity, time management, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for producing high-quality work on tight schedules and collaborating with clients or teams remotely. These skills ensure the designer can deliver compelling, technically accurate visuals efficiently, meeting client expectations and project deadlines.

What challenges do Weekend 3D Designers face, and how can they manage their workload?

Weekend 3D Designers often need to balance tight deadlines with limited hours, as projects may require rapid turnaround while maintaining high-quality standards. Effective time management and strong communication with clients or team members are crucial for clarifying project requirements and prioritizing tasks. Utilizing efficient workflow tools and preparing templates or reusable assets can also help streamline the design process. Staying organized and setting realistic expectations will enable Weekend 3D Designers to deliver impressive results within the condensed timeframe.

What is the difference between Weekend 3D Designer vs Part-Time 3D Artist?

We are currently seeking a full-time Senior Fabrication Designer to help bring creative ideas to life, from traditional architectural models to full-scale installations. The ideal candidate has a strong design portfolio, demonstrates advanced Rhino 3D skills, and is familiar with both traditional and digital fabrication methods. Strong communication skills are an essential part of this role, as being able to work closely with our designers and engineers to translate their ideas into physical reality is central to how we work. Our culture is built around a shared passion for making and fabrication. As a small team with diverse backgrounds, we value close collaboration and continuous learning and aim to foster a supportive environment where design exploration is central to our process. Self‑motivated individuals will have ample opportunities to build new skills and learn from a wide range of design professionals.

This position reports to the Director of Fabrication and works closely with our Design and Storytelling teams across all our offices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop conceptual designs into detailed technical models
  • Collaborate with the Fabrication team to determine optimal build strategies and fabrication details
  • Output both client‑facing and internal clean, accurate 2D technical drawings from 3D models
  • Generate comprehensive project documentation, including parts lists, exploded‑view diagrams, and fabrication specs
  • Outline material, dimensional, and hardware requirements
  • Output CAM‑ready files for CNC, 3D printer, and other digital fabrication tools
  • Safely operate woodshop equipment
  • Support troubleshooting and meticulous maintenance of our CNC machine, laser cutters, and 3D printers
  • Embrace and take part in a collaborative team culture that values problem‑solving and knowledge‑sharing
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in either professional or academic settings
  • Degree in architecture, industrial design, engineering, or related fields
  • Proficiency in Rhino 3D
  • Experience with parametric design tools, such as Grasshopper
  • Experience with complex geometry
  • Familiarity with woodshop equipment
  • Familiarity with CNC CAM software, such as RhinoCAM or Fusion
  • Familiarity with digital fabrication tools, such as CNC routers, robotic arms, and 3D printers
  • Strong communication skills
  • Strong creative problem‑solving and organizational skills
  • Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team
  • Enthusiasm for designing and making
