Job description

Position Description Join us in shaping Seattle's streets. At the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT), we don't just move people-we connect communities, build safer streets, and create a more sustainable city. With a bold vision for the future, we're tackling big challenges: making travel safer, cutting carbon emissions, and ensuring reliable, affordable transportation for everyone-no matter who they are or where they live.

Seattle is growing fast, and we're growing with it. Thanks to a historic voter-approved $1.55 billion investment in transportation in 2024, we're building sidewalks, fixing bridges, and improving transit connections to keep our city moving. We're a team of problem solvers, planners, engineers, communicators, and field crews-bringing purpose-driven work to life

Now, we need passionate, innovative talent like you. Let's build a Seattle that works for everyone-together. Want to use your Civil Engineering Drafting education and/or experience to support SDOT's civil infrastructure projects.

Then consider applying. The Engineering Services Group with the Capital Projects Division has a great opportunity for two (2) Transportation Design Drafters (Civil Engineering Specialist, Assistant I). We are seeking motivated and creative individuals to perform a supporting role in plan production for capital projects within the City of Seattle and serve as a drafter for civil infrastructure projects focused on bicycle, transit, bridge rehabilitation, roadway structures, and arterial paving and resurfacing.

Projects may include work related to Neighborhood Greenways, Bicycle Master Plan, Transit Master Plan, and Pedestrian Master Plan improvements. Job Responsibilities Under continuing supervision, produce high-quality civil engineering AutoCAD drawings in accordance with established engineering standards and accepted professional practices. Using Civil3D tools to create and modify 3D surfaces, profiles, and pipe networks.

Manage AutoCAD files in a cloud based file sharing platform and support teams with the development of plan sheets and design files. Preparing structural details, retaining wall elevations, and profiles. Research utility records, review as-built drawings, and perform coordination to prepare underground utility basemaps.

Providing exceptional customer service and demonstration of initiative in problem solving. Supporting the development, innovation and implementation of CAD drafting tools and standards enhancements for the Division and the Department. Working closely with a multi-disciplinary group of engineering professionals.

Contributing to environment of continual improvement, and innovation. Perform effectively under pressure while managing multiple simultaneous work assignments. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: Education: Associate Degree in Civil Engineering Technology or two years of college level coursework in engineering and construction technology OR: An equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the position duties.

License, Certification: Current Washington State Driver's License or evidence of equivalent mobility. Though not requirements, strong candidates will have some of the following experience or are able to describe comparable experience: Experience with Civil3D and ACAD software. Familiarity with City of Seattle ROWIM and City CAD Standards.

Proficient in Microsoft Office products. Demonstrated written and oral communications skills. Experience working on dynamic and fast paced projects.

Work Environment / Physical Demands: Work is typically performed in a hybrid work environment in which a minimum of 3 days of the work is completed in a City office, and 2 days of work is completed remotely in a regular 40-hour work week. Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances and work in or near construction sites. May be required to work nights, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
