What is a WebGL Developer job?

A WebGL Developer is a software engineer who specializes in creating interactive 2D and 3D graphics for web applications using WebGL, a JavaScript API for rendering graphics in the browser without plugins. They work with technologies like JavaScript, GLSL (OpenGL Shading Language), and frameworks such as Three.js or Babylon.js. Their role includes optimizing performance, ensuring compatibility across devices, and integrating 3D elements with web applications. WebGL Developers often collaborate with designers and backend developers to create immersive web experiences.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Webgl Developer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a WebGL Developer, you need strong skills in JavaScript, WebGL, 3D graphics programming, and a solid understanding of computer graphics principles, often supported by a relevant degree or portfolio. Familiarity with frameworks like Three.js or Babylon.js, as well as version control systems like Git, is typically required. Creative problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective collaboration skills set candidates apart in this role. These competencies are critical for creating interactive, high-performance visual experiences that meet project requirements and integrate smoothly with team workflows.

What types of projects do WebGL Developers typically work on, and how collaborative is the role?

WebGL Developers are often involved in projects that range from interactive data visualizations and 3D modeling tools to complex web-based games and virtual experiences. The role is highly collaborative, frequently requiring close work with UI/UX designers, back-end developers, and project managers to bring visually engaging and responsive applications to life. You might spend your days prototyping features, optimizing graphics performance, and ensuring compatibility across browsers and devices. This teamwork-oriented environment helps deliver polished products and provides opportunities to learn from other disciplines within a creative tech team.

Job description

Join the team bringing advanced autonomy to the built world
At Bedrock, we're moving AI out of the lab and into the real world. Our team is composed of industry veterans who helped launch Waymo, scaled Segment to a $3.2B acquisition, and grew Uber Freight to $5B in revenue. Today, we're deploying autonomous systems on heavy construction machinery across the country, accelerating project schedules of billion-dollar infrastructure projects and improving safety on job sites. Backed by $350M in funding, we're working quickly to close the gap between America's surging demand for housing, data centers, manufacturing hubs, and the construction industry's growing labor shortage.
This is where algorithms meet steel-toed boots. You'll collaborate with construction veterans and world-class engineers to solve physical-world problems that simulations can't touch. If you're ready to apply cutting-edge technology to solve meaningful problems alongside a talented team-we'd love to have you join us.
About The Role
We are building highly complex interfaces for the bleeding edge of robotics and autonomy. A customer's first real contact with Bedrock technology is the interface that mediates the autonomous machine and their intentions. It is critical that the software they interact with is as magical as the autonomy that powers the machine.
In this foundational role, you will establish our core UI interactions and workflows. You will deeply own our software stack, pushing the boundaries of what is possible across a variety of browser and native environments to deliver ultra-low latency control over heavy machinery.
Also, you get to drive 100,000 lb excavators.
What You'll Do
  • Take a foundational role in establishing the core UI interactions, architecture, and workflows that operators, engineers, and field teams rely on every day.
  • Architect highly complex interfaces capable of visualizing massive multi-modal datasets (telemetry, live video, 3D scenes, geospatial maps) in real time.
  • Push the performance limits of modern frontend frameworks across mobile operating systems to ensure a seamless, magical user experience.
  • Own the 0-to-1 design and implementation of frontend foundations, including state management patterns, component systems, and asynchronous data flows.
  • Partner closely with robotics, autonomy, and backend engineers to translate high-dimensional machine data into intuitive operational workflows.

Required Qualifications
  • 6+ years of professional experience driving the design, architecture, and implementation of highly complex, business-critical frontend applications.
  • Deep expertise in React Native, with an ability to step into Swift and Kotlin when needed.
  • A strong understanding of network management, memory management, and rendering performance.
  • Experience building sophisticated applications that handle massive datasets, complex state, real-time data streaming (WebSockets, WebRTC), and asynchronous flows.
  • Strong product and systems thinking: the ability to design architectures from first principles and craft polished, "magical" user experiences for power users.
  • Comfort deeply owning a software stack and navigating the ambiguity of rapid prototyping in a fast-paced startup environment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience pushing performance boundaries in React Native.
  • Background in 3D visualization, rendering, or scene-based interfaces using WebGL/WebGPU, Three.js, CesiumJS or similar technologies.
  • Experience working with geospatial tooling, massive map datasets, or GIS systems (e.g., handling GeoTIFFs, WGS84, custom projections).
  • Familiarity with ultra-low latency workflows, real-time video streaming pipelines, or interfaces operating in constrained edge-network environments.
  • Previous experience designing user experiences for robotics, autonomous vehicles, industrial systems, or teleoperation command-and-control platforms.

Our roles are often flexible. If you don't fit all the criteria, or are in another location (especially one where we have an office like SF or NY) please apply anyway! We'd love to consider you.
