What is Web3 accounting?

Web3 accounting refers to the practice of managing, tracking, and reporting financial transactions that occur on blockchain and decentralized platforms. Unlike traditional accounting, Web3 accounting deals with cryptocurrencies, tokens, NFTs, and other digital assets, requiring specialized tools and knowledge to ensure accuracy and compliance. Accountants in this field must understand blockchain technology, smart contracts, and often work with decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols. The role is evolving quickly as regulations and technologies change, making ongoing education crucial for professionals in this area.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Web3 accountant?

To thrive as a Web3 Accountant, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, blockchain technology, cryptocurrency transactions, and relevant financial regulations, often supported by a degree in accounting or finance and professional certification (e.g., CPA or equivalent). Familiarity with blockchain explorers, crypto tax software, and smart contract auditing tools is typically required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and strong problem-solving skills help you stand out in this rapidly evolving field. These skills ensure accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and effective management of digital assets in decentralized environments.

What are some unique challenges Web3 accountants face when tracking and reporting digital asset transactions?

Web3 Accountants often encounter challenges such as managing the complexity of tracking multiple wallet addresses, handling cross-chain transactions, and ensuring accurate valuation of volatile digital assets. Additionally, they must stay updated on evolving regulatory requirements and best practices for digital asset reporting, which may differ significantly from traditional accounting. Collaborating closely with developers and legal teams is also common, as these professionals help clarify transaction details and compliance standards.

Job description

About the Company
Gemini is a global crypto and Web3 platform founded by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss in 2014, offering a wide range of simple, reliable, and secure crypto products and services to individuals and institutions in over 70 countries. Our mission is to unlock the next era of financial, creative, and personal freedom by providing trusted access to the decentralized future. We envision a world where crypto reshapes the global financial system, internet, and money to create greater choice, independence, and opportunity for all - bridging traditional finance with the emerging cryptoeconomy in a way that is more open, fair, and secure. As a publicly traded company, Gemini is poised to accelerate this vision with greater scale, reach, and impact.
The Department: Legal
The Legal department at Gemini is making history every day, as we creatively apply the legacy of law to the future of markets and digital assets. On this team, you will tackle complex and unprecedented applications of the current legal system to the revolutionary industry of cryptocurrency and financial markets. You'll work alongside colleagues covering the digital asset exchange, credit card program, broker-dealer, predictions markets, and institutional/commercial matters - a team operating across the full spectrum of financial services regulation, not just crypto. At Gemini, Legal plays a critical role in guiding innovation and driving value for the business, while upholding our core tenets of security, compliance, and trust for our customers. Join us and help define the Legal Department of the Future.
The Role: Product Counsel
As Product Counsel at Gemini, you are the ultimate general athlete. Leveraging both breadth and depth of experience at a law firm and/or as in-house counsel, you will help Gemini tackle the complex legal challenges that confront disruptive emerging products and markets. You will support Gemini's digital asset exchange, credit card and payments, broker-dealer, predictions markets, and institutional business lines - spanning active licensing campaigns, new product launches, and the regulatory landscape as it evolves. By navigating unprecedented legal complexities across Product, Business Development, Finance and Accounting, Technology, and Security, you'll play a critical role in building our business at the forefront of the future of money. This isn't generalist crypto work: you'll be the point person on regulatory strategy for products spanning payments, broker-dealer operations, prediction markets, and whatever we build next.
Responsibilities:
  • Provide risk-principled legal, regulatory, and strategic advice to product, design, marketing, and technology teams during all phases of the product development lifecycle.
  • Provide holistic legal support of complex financial arrangements at the intersection of cryptocurrency and traditional financial arrangements, including crypto custody, lending, OTC trading, and other complex financial products.
  • Draft and negotiate complex agreements and establish thoughtful standards, such as SLAs, for retail and institutional customers based on regulatory requirements and market norms.
  • Manage projects effectively and collaboratively.
  • Build positive and influential relationships with Gemini leadership, cross-functional partners, and external stakeholders regarding regulatory matters that impact our products.
  • Collaborate with and support the General Counsel and the rest of the Legal team to evaluate and communicate legal risks and develop creative solutions to bridge business priorities in a changing regulatory landscape.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • JD degree.
  • Minimum 6 years of relevant legal experience at a law firm or in-house.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Member of a US state bar in good standing.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of regulatory frameworks governing lending, payments and depository account products (e.g., state money transmitter licensing, Reg Z, Reg E), and experience in handling inquiries and enforcement matters related to such products.
  • Familiarity with U.S. securities and derivatives laws, including SEC and FINRA broker-dealer rules and CFTC frameworks.
  • Experience in managing licensing applications and supervisory matters for regulated financial services businesses in the U.S. and abroad.
  • Experience drafting customer-facing disclosures and terms for a retail payments business.
  • Proven ability to proactively, efficiently, and accurately assess and mitigate legal risks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Track record of creative problem-solving, excellent written and oral communication skills, and creation of strong and trusted cross-functional relationships.
  • Strong knowledge of and interest in disruptive technology; prior experience working in fintech, digital assets or high-growth tech companies a plus.

It Pays to Work Here
The compensation & benefits package for this role includes:
  • Competitive starting pay
  • A discretionary annual bonus
  • Long-term incentive in the form of a new hire equity grant
  • Comprehensive health plans
  • 401K with company matching
  • Paid Parental Leave
  • Flexible time off

Salary Range: The base salary range for this role is between $162,500 - $250,000 in the State of New York. This range is not inclusive of our discretionary bonus or equity package. When determining a candidate's compensation, we consider a number of factors including skillset, experience, job scope, and current market data.
In the United States, we offer a hybrid work approach at our hub offices, balancing the benefits of in-person collaboration with the flexibility of remote work. Expectations may vary by location and role, so candidates are encouraged to connect with their recruiter to learn more about the specific policy for the role. Employees who do not live near one of our hubs are part of our remote workforce. All employees, however, are required to onboard in-person at one of our office locations.
At Gemini, we strive to build diverse teams that reflect the people we want to empower through our products, and we are committed to equal employment opportunity regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, gender identity, or Veteran status. Equal Opportunity is the Law, and Gemini is proud to be an equal opportunity workplace. If you have a specific need that requires accommodation, please let a member of the People Team know.
