Valnet Inc.

Job description

This position will operate on a remote, contractual basis.
MakeUseOf is looking for Home & DIY Tech writers to join the team!
MUO is one of the largest technology publications on the web today. We aim to equip all readers, whether they're newcomers to tech or seasoned veterans, with the tools they need to make the most of their technology.
We simplify complex topics into guides that anyone can understand, whether they're looking for a list of great gear, need help fixing an issue, or want a product recommendation. Every article leaves the reader with something valuable to take away.
The Home section explores the intersection of practical technology, home automation, and DIY hardware through tools and topics like:
  • Power tools & battery ecosystems (Ryobi, Milwaukee, DeWalt)
  • Smart home sensors (occupancy, motion, contact) & hubs
  • Smart home protocols (Matter, Zigbee, Z-Wave)
  • Home networking infrastructure (Cat6/Cat6a cabling, Ethernet drops)
  • Display & audio cabling (HDMI standards, AV routing)
  • Workshop tech & practical DIY upgrades

We aim to connect with the average reader, writing articles that are approachable, practical, and engaging-even if someone is brand new to home automation or DIY projects. MUO covers general-audience home tech; we don't write in-depth guides targeting professional electricians or commercial installers.
Below are some examples of what we cover in the Home section:
  • https://www.makeuseof.com/dewalt-20v-tools-second-power-level/
  • https://www.makeuseof.com/ethernet-poe-more-powerful/

Responsibilities
  • Write consistently and meet assigned deadlines.
  • Pitch ideas and work with editors to refine them. While you also have the ability to claim ideas created by editors, we want our authors to primarily pitch from their own interests and expertise.
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest tech news, products, and updates.
  • Work within a CMS: adhere to style guidelines, finding and formatting images, adding links, etc.

Application Requirements
  • CV, Cover Letter, screening questions, links to previously published work
  • In your cover letter, please address the following questions: Why do you want to write for MUO? What makes you the right fit for this role? (You can touch upon previous experience and your passion for home tech)

Applicants must be highly motivated and possess the following attributes:
  • Relevant experience in writing and editing
  • A self-starting attitude: being willing to pitch and work on ideas without being prompted
  • Knowledge across a variety of tech (updates to the latest versions + first-hand use of products, platforms, and gear are required)
  • Basic SEO knowledge is preferred, but clear writing and understanding our audience comes first

We will get back to you as soon as possible if we think you'd make a solid addition to the team.
