Web Monitoring information

What is web monitoring?

A Web Monitoring job involves tracking website performance, uptime, security, and user activity to ensure optimal functionality. Professionals in this role use various tools to detect downtime, broken links, slow-loading pages, or potential security threats. They may also analyze web traffic and user behavior to optimize content and functionality. Web Monitoring specialists are essential for maintaining a seamless user experience and ensuring a website remains operational and secure.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of someone working in web monitoring?

Professionals in Web Monitoring typically spend their days tracking website performance, analyzing site traffic, and identifying unusual patterns or potential security threats using specialized monitoring tools. They create regular reports on site uptime, latency, and error rates, and respond quickly to incidents by troubleshooting issues or escalating them to relevant technical teams. In addition to technical tasks, web monitoring specialists often collaborate with developers, IT security personnel, and management to communicate findings and recommend improvements. This dynamic role requires a mix of real-time vigilance and proactive planning to ensure smooth, secure web operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in web monitoring, and why are they important?

To thrive in Web Monitoring, you need strong analytical abilities, attention to detail, and familiarity with cybersecurity principles, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Experience with monitoring tools like Google Analytics, Splunk, or New Relic and knowledge of scripting or automation (e.g., Python, PowerShell) are highly valuable, and certifications such as CompTIA Security+ or Certified Ethical Hacker can be advantageous. Effective communication, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work under pressure help professionals excel in this field. These competencies are essential for promptly detecting, interpreting, and communicating web issues to ensure optimal site performance and security.

Job description

About The Role
We are partnering with an established technology organization seeking a Lead Software Engineer to join a team building a new cloud-native platform supporting safety-focused products and services. This is a highly hands-on engineering role for someone who enjoys building backend systems while providing technical leadership and mentorship to a small team.
The Lead Software Engineer will spend approximately 70% of their time designing and developing software, with the remaining time focused on technical leadership, mentorship, and collaboration. The ideal candidate brings deep .NET/C# and Azure experience along with a strong understanding of distributed systems, API design, cloud scalability, and modern engineering practices. This is an opportunity to help build a greenfield platform from the ground up while remaining closely involved in day-to-day development.
Compensation
Salary: $160k - 175k base + 15% target annual bonus
Benefits: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage, 401(k) with employer match, paid time off, wellness benefits, tuition reimbursement, and additional employee programs
Primary Responsibilities
  • Lead hands-on development of backend services and APIs using .NET/C# within a modern Azure environment.
  • Help build a new cloud-native platform centered on safety alerts, external integrations, and scalable API capabilities.
  • Design and implement distributed services with an emphasis on reliability, security, performance, and maintainability.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to a small engineering team while continuing to contribute code approximately 70% of the time.
  • Establish practical development standards through thoughtful code reviews, testing practices, and day-to-day technical direction.
  • Contribute to system design and architectural discussions while remaining focused on implementation and delivery rather than functioning solely as an architect.
  • Develop solutions leveraging Azure services, containerized workloads, messaging technologies, search capabilities, caching, and other components of a distributed architecture.
  • Help define effective REST API patterns and standards, including solutions involving public-facing and third-party integrations.
  • Partner with product and other stakeholders to translate business requirements into clear, practical technical solutions.
  • Improve application reliability and visibility through monitoring, logging, and observability practices.
  • Mentor engineers at different experience levels and help create an accountable, collaborative, and supportive engineering environment.
  • Clearly communicate technical concepts, tradeoffs, and decisions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Candidate Qualifications
  • 7+ years of professional software engineering experience with significant hands-on experience developing backend applications, services, and APIs.
  • Advanced proficiency with .NET and C# in production environments.
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems, REST API standards, cloud scalability, and modern backend development patterns.
  • Hands-on experience developing cloud-native solutions in Azure.
  • Experience with Azure services such as Functions, Container Apps, Blob Storage, API Management, Service Bus, and/or Event Hubs.
  • Strong relational database experience with technologies such as SQL Server or PostgreSQL.
  • Experience building and deploying containerized applications with Docker; Kubernetes experience is highly valued.
  • Experience with Elasticsearch and caching technologies such as Redis.
  • Familiarity with production monitoring and observability tools such as Datadog and Azure Application Insights.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to system design while remaining highly hands-on with software development.
  • Experience mentoring or technically leading other engineers; formal people-management experience is not required.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical decisions and concepts to both engineering and business stakeholders.
  • Experience developing public-facing APIs or integrating third-party APIs is a plus.
  • Familiarity with TypeScript, domain-driven design, clean architecture, microservices, GraphQL, and/or NoSQL databases is beneficial.
