What is web development?

Web development is the process of creating, building, and maintaining websites or web applications that are accessed through the internet. It involves a combination of programming, design, and content creation to ensure that sites are functional, user-friendly, and visually appealing. Web development can range from creating simple static web pages to complex dynamic web applications, and typically includes both front-end (client-side) and back-end (server-side) development.

Can I be a web developer with no experience?

Job description

Platform Engineer, Test
Location: AustinAbout the Role

The Platform Engineer, Test at inKind is responsible for owning and evolving the testing platform that underpins the quality and velocity of every product we ship. This role exists to ensure that engineering teams can move quickly and confidently - backed by automated testing infrastructure that is fast, reliable, and trusted across web, mobile, and backend services.

This is a deeply technical, hands-on role with meaningful ownership. You will design and build the frameworks, harnesses, and CI/CD systems that engineers rely on every day to verify their changes. You will help define what "tested" means at inKind and partner with software engineers to make our applications easier to test from the start.

At inKind, engineering operates through small, autonomous pods that own products and outcomes end-to-end. Rather than acting as a centralized gatekeeper, you will enable every pod to deliver high-quality software independently by providing the tooling, standards, and infrastructure that scale across the organization. Your success will be measured not only by the quality of the testing platform itself, but by how effectively engineering teams can move with confidence.

You'll work closely with application engineers, quality engineers, product managers, and engineering leaders, but your primary focus will be the platform itself: the frameworks, infrastructure, tooling, and pipelines that make high-quality software possible at scale.

Role ResponsibilitiesTesting Platform & Frameworks
  • Own and evolve inKind's web and mobile testing platforms, including framework selection, architecture, and long-term direction
  • Design and maintain automation frameworks using industry-standard tooling
  • Build and maintain harnesses for unit, integration, and UI testing
  • Establish reusable testing patterns that can be adopted consistently across pods
  • Partner with engineering teams to improve testability and reduce friction in the development process
  • Help define testing standards and best practices that scale across multiple product teams
CI/CD & Developer Experience
  • Design and maintain CI/CD pipelines that execute tests reliably and surface failures clearly
  • Build guardrails such as coverage requirements, quality gates, and automated checks that support engineering quality
  • Continuously improve pipeline performance, reliability, and developer feedback loops
  • Own the operational health of testing infrastructure, including reliability, scalability, and cost management
  • Reduce friction for engineers by improving tooling, documentation, and onboarding experiences
Collaboration & Technical Leadership
  • Partner closely with software engineers to design testable systems and features
  • Work alongside quality engineers to align automation strategies with exploratory and manual testing efforts
  • Support engineering pods in adopting testing best practices and platform capabilities
  • Mentor engineers on testing patterns, framework usage, and quality engineering fundamentals
  • Contribute to engineering standards that improve consistency across teams
Minimum Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience building web and/or mobile testing platforms used by engineers
  • 5+ years of experience writing unit, integration, and UI tests across the testing pyramid
  • 3+ years of experience building and maintaining CI/CD solutions that enforce engineering quality standards
  • Experience working closely with software engineers to design testable systems and features
  • Deep knowledge of testing frameworks such as Appium, XCUI, Espresso, Selenium, Playwright, Cypress, or similar tools
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and a practical approach to technical challenges
  • Passion for engineering quality and a track record of improving developer workflows
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting multiple product teams or pods through shared platform ownership
  • Experience scaling testing infrastructure during periods of rapid company growth
  • Familiarity with AWS, GCP, or Azure environments
  • Experience with containerized testing environments and CI/CD optimization
  • Experience with mobile device farms, test parallelization, or cross-platform test orchestration
  • Exposure to AI-powered testing tools and automation techniques
  • Experience working within a Rails-based application ecosystem
Compensation

Base Salary: $150,000 - $160,000
