What does a web developer do?

A Web Developer is responsible for designing, coding, and maintaining websites and web applications. They work with programming languages like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and often backend languages such as PHP, Python, or Ruby. Web Developers ensure that websites are functional, user-friendly, and responsive across different devices. They may also collaborate with designers and content creators to deliver a seamless online experience.

Is it hard to become a web developer?

Becoming a web developer requires learning programming languages such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, along with understanding web frameworks and tools. It typically involves self-study, coding practice, and sometimes formal education or certifications, but the difficulty varies based on prior experience and learning pace.

What are some common challenges web developers face when working on cross-functional teams?

Web developers often collaborate with designers, product managers, and backend engineers, which can present challenges in aligning priorities and communication styles. For example, translating design concepts into functional code may require negotiation and compromise, while ensuring that technical constraints are understood by non-technical team members. Regular meetings, clear documentation, and using project management tools can help facilitate smoother collaboration and address these challenges effectively.

Are web development jobs still in demand?

Web development jobs remain in high demand due to ongoing digital transformation across industries. Skills in front-end and back-end technologies, along with knowledge of frameworks and responsive design, are particularly valuable in the current job market.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a web developer?

To thrive as a Web Developer, you need strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and familiarity with frameworks like React or Angular, usually supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp. Knowledge of version control systems (e.g., Git), content management systems, and sometimes certifications like AWS Certified Developer are commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with teams and translating client requirements into functional websites. These skills and qualities are vital for delivering responsive, secure, and user-friendly web solutions that meet business needs.

FieldAI

Irvine, CA

$125K - $170K/yr

Full-time

Job description

FieldAI’s Irvine team is where embodied AI meets real robots, real sensors, and real field deployments. Based in the heart of Southern California’s robotics ecosystem, we build risk-aware, reliable, field-ready AI systems that solve the hardest problems in robotics and unlock the full potential of embodied intelligence. If you want your work to ship, get tested on hardware, and improve through real deployments, Irvine is the place. We go beyond typical data-driven approaches or pure transformer-only architectures, combining rigorous engineering with learning systems proven in globally deployed solutions that deliver results today and get better every time our robots run in the field.
What You'll Do:
  • Own and improve CI/CD pipelines for web services and applications (Node.js, React)

  • Design and maintain release processes that ensure safe, reliable deployments

  • Build and enforce testing and validation workflows to catch issues before production

  • Manage and scale containerized infrastructure (Docker, Kubernetes) in AWS

  • Monitor system performance, reliability, and uptime across production environments

  • Partner with full-stack engineers to improve deployment velocity and system stability

  • Debug and resolve production issues across application, infrastructure, and deployment layers

  • Improve observability, logging, and alerting to proactively detect failures

What You Bring:
  • 3–8 years of experience in DevOps, infrastructure, or production engineering roles

  • Strong experience with AWS and containerized environments (Docker, Kubernetes)

  • Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions or similar)

  • Familiarity with modern web stacks (Node.js, TypeScript, React)

  • Experience managing production systems and debugging real-world issues

  • Understanding of testing strategies for release reliability and system validation

  • Strong ownership mindset with a focus on system stability and quality

  • Ability to work cross-functionally with engineering teams

What Sets You Apart:
  • Experience owning release processes and production readiness for web applications

  • Experience improving system reliability, uptime, and deployment safety at scale

  • Familiarity with MongoDB or similar databases in production environments

  • Experience building internal tooling to improve developer workflows

  • Experience in fast-paced startup environments

Our salary range is highly competitive with the market, but we take into consideration an individual's background and experience in determining final salary. Base pay offered may vary depending on geographic location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

In addition to competitive compensation, FieldAI offers comprehensive benefits, equity participation, and the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge advancements in AI and robotics.

Our salary range is generous and we consider each individual’s background and experience when determining final compensation. Base pay may vary based on role scope, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and the Irvine, California market.

Why Join FieldAI in Irvine?
In Irvine, you will work where the robots are. Our local team builds and tests systems on real hardware with real sensors, then ships them to operate in unstructured, previously unknown environments around the world. We are solving one of robotics’ hardest challenges: reliable deployment outside the lab. Our Field Foundational Models™ raise the bar for perception, planning, localization, and manipulation, with an emphasis on explainability and safety for real-world use.
You will collaborate with a world-class team that thrives on creativity, resilience, and bold thinking. We bring deep experience from organizations such as DeepMind, NASA JPL, Boston Dynamics, NVIDIA, Amazon, Tesla Autopilot, Cruise, Zoox, Toyota Research Institute, and SpaceX, along with a track record of field deployments and strong performance in DARPA challenge segments.

Be Part of the Next Robotics Revolution
We are looking for builders who want their work to leave the whiteboard and show up on robots. If you enjoy tackling tough, uncharted questions and working across disciplines, you will find your people here. Our teams span AI, software, robotics engineering, product, field deployment, and technical communication, all focused on shipping systems that perform in the real world.

Our headquarters is in Irvine, and we partner closely with teams there as well as colleagues across the US and around the world. Join us in Southern California and help define what dependable, field-ready autonomy looks like.

We value diverse perspectives and are committed to fostering an inclusive workplace. We evaluate candidates and employees based on merit, qualifications, and performance, and we do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, gender, national origin, ethnicity, veteran status, disability status, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, or any other legally protected status.

We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of the hiring process, such as reviewing applications, analyzing resumes, or assessing responses and identifying potential inconsistencies or verification signals in application materials based on available information. These tools assist our recruitment team but do not replace human judgment. Final hiring decisions are ultimately made by humans.
