What Is a Web Developer Job Description?

Web Developers generate traffic for their clients' products and services by creating eye-catching and effective websites. They identify potential users and design a website that appeals to these customers. They may meet with existing and potential clients to consider their wants and needs for a website or consider how best to maintain their current website’s functionality. Web Developers typically work on a team; they may collaborate to create the layout of a new website and design new elements such as logos. As a Web Developer, you are always primarily concerned with creating an aesthetically pleasing and user-friendly page.

What does a Web Developer do?

A Web Developer is responsible for designing, coding, and maintaining websites and web applications. They work with programming languages like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and often backend languages such as PHP, Python, or Ruby. Web Developers ensure that websites are functional, user-friendly, and responsive across different devices. They may also collaborate with designers and content creators to deliver a seamless online experience.

What are some common challenges web developers face when working on cross-functional teams?

Web developers often collaborate with designers, product managers, and backend engineers, which can present challenges in aligning priorities and communication styles. For example, translating design concepts into functional code may require negotiation and compromise, while ensuring that technical constraints are understood by non-technical team members. Regular meetings, clear documentation, and using project management tools can help facilitate smoother collaboration and address these challenges effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Web Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Web Developer, you need strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and familiarity with frameworks like React or Angular, usually supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp. Knowledge of version control systems (e.g., Git), content management systems, and sometimes certifications like AWS Certified Developer are commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with teams and translating client requirements into functional websites. These skills and qualities are vital for delivering responsive, secure, and user-friendly web solutions that meet business needs.

This role is responsible for performing technical and functional software specification, design, coding, testing, and documentation in support of our engine overhaul and repair operations. You will work within an Agile team to develop and maintain a mission-critical application that directly supports engine maintenance operations.

What You Will Do:

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain full-stack features using C# / .NET 10 and Blazor Server with MudBlazor component library

  • Build and optimize RESTful API endpoints following Clean Architecture patterns (Domain, Application, Infrastructure, Web/API layers)

  • Write and maintain Oracle database schemas, stored procedures, migrations, and performance-tuned queries using Entity Framework Core and Dapper

  • Implement real-time features using SignalR for live dashboard updates and cross-user notifications

  • Develop and maintain a data synchronization engine that integrates legacy Oracle data sources using configurable field mappings and transform rules

  • Build AI-powered features leveraging Anthropic Claude API for intelligent search, field mapping suggestions, and engineering request draft generation

  • Implement role-based access control (RBAC) with JWT authentication, privilege-based page access, and multi-site scoping

  • Generate PDF and Excel reports using ClosedXML for shop floor documentation and management reporting

  • Collaborate with MRO operations stakeholders, shop floor supervisors, and engineering teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions

  • Participate in code reviews, standards enforcement, and continuous improvement of development practices

  • Support database normalization and data integrity initiatives across 100+ Oracle tables

  • Write unit and integration tests using xUnit and Moq

Qualifications You Must Have

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or related STEM field and 5 years of professional software development experience; OR an Advanced degree and 3 years of experience; OR 9 years of relevant professional experience in lieu of a degree with a High School Diploma

  • Proficiency in C# and the .NET ecosystem (ASP.NET Core, Entity Framework Core)

  • Experience with relational database development — writing complex SQL, schema design, stored procedures, and query optimization (Oracle preferred, SQL Server acceptable)

  • Demonstrated experience building web applications with modern component-based frameworks (Blazor, React, Angular, or Vue.js)

  • Experience with RESTful API design and implementation

  • Familiarity with version control (Git) and Agile development methodologies (Scrum, Kanban)

  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to debug complex full-stack issues across browser, server, and database layers

Qualifications We Prefer

  • Experience with Blazor Server or Blazor WebAssembly — this is our primary frontend technology

  • Hands-on experience with Oracle Database , PL/SQL, Oracle-specific EF Core provider, and Oracle migration scripting

  • Experience with MudBlazor or similar Blazor component libraries

  • Experience with SignalR or WebSocket-based real-time communication

  • Familiarity with JWT authentication and claims-based authorization patterns

  • Experience with data migration or ETL pipelines — particularly integrating legacy systems with modern platforms

  • Exposure to AI/ML integration in enterprise applications (prompt engineering, API integration with LLMs such as Claude or GPT)

  • Experience generating documents programmatically ( ClosedXML, or similar)

  • Understanding of Clean Architecture / Domain-Driven Design (DDD) patterns

  • Experience in MRO, manufacturing, or aerospace environments

  • Familiarity with Dapper for high-performance data access alongside EF Core

Pratt & Whitney has a long history of leadership and innovation in the field of aviation propulsion. Our story begins in the 1920s and has flourished throughout the decades. We have continuously transformed and reinvented our businesses to offer superior products and services to our customers. In 1925, the Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Company was founded by Frederick B. Rentschler, pioneer of the air-cooled radial engine design which enabled unprecedented power-to-weight ratio. Its first engine, the R-1340 Wasp engine, transformed military and commercial aviation and is still in use today. In 1928, the Canadian division of the Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Company was established. In 1944, Pratt & Whitney began its gas turbine and jet propulsion initiative. The company constructed a wind tunnel, laboratory and engineering center to support our allies’ efforts in World War II. In 1945, wartime production included more than 300,000 Pratt & Whitney engines, touted by service members as extremely dependable – a legacy that continues today. From there, Pratt & Whitney continued to design and innovate more powerful, agile, and reliable engines becoming a leader in the aerospace industry. Today, Pratt & Whitney has more than 85,000 engines in service and more than 16,000 customers worldwide.
