What are Web Developer Software Developers?

Web Developer Software Developers are professionals who design, build, and maintain websites and web applications. They use programming languages like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and various frameworks to create user-friendly and functional online experiences. These developers may work on both the front-end (what users see) and the back-end (server-side logic and databases) of web applications. They collaborate with designers, content creators, and other developers to ensure websites are visually appealing, responsive, and perform well across different devices. Their role is essential in bringing digital ideas to life and ensuring smooth online interactions.

How do Web Developers and Software Developers typically collaborate on large-scale projects?

Web Developers and Software Developers often work closely together on large-scale projects to ensure seamless integration between front-end interfaces and back-end systems. Web Developers focus on creating user-facing elements, while Software Developers handle the logic, data processing, and server-side functionality. Effective collaboration involves regular meetings, shared documentation, and version control practices to align on project requirements and resolve integration issues. This teamwork not only streamlines development but also enhances the final product's usability and performance.

Are web developer jobs still in demand?

Web developer jobs remain in high demand due to ongoing digital transformation and the need for businesses to maintain and improve their online presence. Skills in front-end and back-end development, along with knowledge of programming languages like JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, are particularly valuable in the current job market.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Web Developer or Software Developer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Web Developer or Software Developer, you typically need proficiency in programming languages (such as JavaScript, Python, or Java), a solid understanding of software development principles, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with development tools, version control systems like Git, and frameworks such as React, Angular, or Django is highly valuable, and certifications like AWS Certified Developer or Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are key soft skills that set top performers apart. These technical and interpersonal skills are essential for building reliable, scalable applications and collaborating successfully in dynamic development teams.

Is 40 too old to become a web developer?

Web developer roles are open to individuals of all ages, and many successful developers start or transition into the field later in life. Skills such as coding languages, problem-solving, and continuous learning are more important than age, and experience from other careers can be an asset. Age should not be a barrier to entering web development if you are committed to learning and adapting to new technologies.

Is AI replacing web developers?

AI tools are increasingly automating certain coding tasks for web developers, such as code generation and testing, but they do not fully replace the need for skilled developers. Web development requires creativity, problem-solving, and understanding user experience, which AI cannot fully replicate. Developers who adapt by learning new tools and programming skills will remain valuable in the evolving tech environment.

Can a web developer be a software developer?

Yes, a web developer can become a software developer, as both roles involve programming and problem-solving skills. Web development often focuses on building websites and web applications using languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, while software development encompasses a broader range of applications and programming languages such as Java, C++, or Python. Transitioning between these roles may require learning additional programming languages and development environments.

Job description

Stoa Group is a vertically integrated real estate company that develops, builds, owns, and operates apartment communities throughout the Gulf Coast and Southeast.

Our Data & Technology team owns an in-house platform that brings leasing, banking and capital markets, construction, accounting, and operational data together into a single source of truth. Through custom applications, dashboards, APIs, and data infrastructure, we provide the information our teams rely on to make decisions across the business.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

We're looking for a Software Developer / Data Engineer to help build and support the technology platform that powers our business.

This is an opportunity to work on a business-critical platform used every day by property managers, asset managers, construction teams, and company leadership. While this role will touch the full stack, the primary focus is backend development, databases, APIs, cloud-hosted applications, and data infrastructure.

You'll work closely with the Data & Technology team to build new capabilities, improve existing systems, automate business processes, and create scalable solutions as the company continues to grow.

This is a hybrid position with a home office based in either Hammond, LA or Charlotte, NC. Candidates may reside in the Hammond/Northshore, Baton Rouge, New Orleans, or Charlotte markets. Regular in-person collaboration will take place in the assigned office location.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Build and maintain backend applications, APIs, and system integrations.
  • Write, optimize, and troubleshoot SQL queries, stored procedures, and database processes.
  • Develop and support data pipelines that move information between business systems.
  • Support cloud-hosted applications, deployments, monitoring, and system performance.
  • Investigate and resolve data, application, and integration issues.
  • Automate recurring processes and identify opportunities to improve efficiency.
  • Participate in testing, code reviews, and deployment activities.
  • Partner with business teams to understand challenges and develop practical technology solutions.
  • Contribute ideas and recommendations that improve the platform, development process, and overall user experience.

WHY JOIN STOA:

  • Real ownership and visible impact. You'll work on systems used across the company every day, and your work will quickly move from idea to production.
  • Broad technical exposure. While your primary focus will be backend systems, data infrastructure, and APIs, you'll gain exposure to applications, integrations, databases, cloud infrastructure, AI tools, and automation.
  • Modern technology stack. We actively use AI, automation, and modern development tools to help us move faster, solve problems, and improve how the business operates.
  • Understand the "why" behind the work. You'll work closely with the people who use what you build and gain exposure to operations, accounting, construction, development, and asset management.
  • Help shape whatโ€™s next. As the platform and team continue to grow, you'll have the opportunity to take ownership of larger initiatives, influence technical decisions, and help define how we build and support technology across the organization.

Stoa Group develops, builds, owns, and operates apartment communities throughout the Gulf Coast and Southeast. We are a values-driven organization that puts people first and believes our employees are our greatest asset. We look for individuals who exemplify our core values, contribute positive energy to our culture, and are committed to continuous improvement.

We believe in investing in our people and creating an environment where employees can grow, contribute, and make a meaningful impact.

Benefits include:

  • Competitive Salary
  • 401(k) with Company Match
  • Paid Time Off and Paid Holidays
  • 100% Employer-Paid Health Insurance for Employees
  • Dental and Vision Insurance
  • Employee Rental Discount
  • Professional Development Opportunities

Stoa Group is an Equal Opportunity Employer M/F/Disability/Veterans. All applicants must be authorized to work in the United States.
