What is a web developer software developer?

Web Developer Software Developers are professionals who design, build, and maintain websites and web applications. They use programming languages like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and various frameworks to create user-friendly and functional online experiences. These developers may work on both the front-end (what users see) and the back-end (server-side logic and databases) of web applications. They collaborate with designers, content creators, and other developers to ensure websites are visually appealing, responsive, and perform well across different devices. Their role is essential in bringing digital ideas to life and ensuring smooth online interactions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a web developer or software developer?

To excel as a Web Developer or Software Developer, you typically need proficiency in programming languages (such as JavaScript, Python, or Java), a solid understanding of software development principles, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with development tools, version control systems like Git, and frameworks such as React, Angular, or Django is highly valuable, and certifications like AWS Certified Developer or Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are key soft skills that set top performers apart. These technical and interpersonal skills are essential for building reliable, scalable applications and collaborating successfully in dynamic development teams.

How do web developers and software developers typically collaborate on large-scale projects?

Web Developers and Software Developers often work closely together on large-scale projects to ensure seamless integration between front-end interfaces and back-end systems. Web Developers focus on creating user-facing elements, while Software Developers handle the logic, data processing, and server-side functionality. Effective collaboration involves regular meetings, shared documentation, and version control practices to align on project requirements and resolve integration issues. This teamwork not only streamlines development but also enhances the final product's usability and performance.

Job description

Love building new things—but also get a weird amount of satisfaction from tracking down the one plugin, line of code or integration causing everything to misbehave? Hiebing is looking for a curious and resourceful Web Developer who’s excited to build smart digital experiences, solve unfamiliar problems and keep growing alongside a collaborative team. WordPress will be at the center of the role, but your work—and your opportunity to make an impact—will extend well beyond it.

Hiebing is seeking a curious, motivated and innovative Web Developer who is eager to build intelligent solutions in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment. Our team values learning, support and innovation, creating a culture where developers can grow, contribute and have fun doing great work. WordPress development and maintenance will be at the center of this role, but we’re looking for someone who is equally energized by troubleshooting an integration, helping implement tagging, debugging an email or figuring out something they haven’t encountered before.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter who is curious, resourceful and motivated to find answers independently. They see unfamiliar challenges as opportunities to learn rather than barriers and are comfortable moving between different types of digital work as client and team needs evolve.

This role will initially be divided between new WordPress development and maintenance for existing clients, with the potential to create new capabilities and offerings for our clients and eventually lead the WordPress development practice at Hiebing.

Responsibilities
  • Develop, enhance and maintain WordPress websites, including block editor/Gutenberg development, theme customization, plugin configuration and integrations.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve website issues, including plugin conflicts, third-party integrations, browser and device inconsistencies, and performance problems.
  • Support ongoing website maintenance, landing pages, forms, content migrations and other digital enhancements across multiple client properties.
  • Assist with analytics and tagging implementations using tools such as Google Tag Manager and GA4, including implementation, troubleshooting and QA.
  • Support email development and production needs, including building and modifying HTML emails, troubleshooting rendering or template issues, and conducting technical QA.
  • Implement and troubleshoot marketing technology integrations, including forms, analytics, consent management, email platforms and other third-party tools.
  • Work within Git-based development workflows and follow established practices for commits, branching, pull requests, releases and documentation.
  • Collaborate with developers, digital strategists, project managers, designers and other team members to solve problems and deliver high-quality work.
  • Maintain security, accessibility, performance and quality standards across development work.
Required Skills and Experience
  • 2–3 years of professional web development experience, with meaningful hands-on WordPress theme development experience.
  • Comfort using GitHub Copilot for AI-assisted development and as part of the problem-solving process.
  • Strong HTML, CSS and JavaScript fundamentals.
  • Working knowledge of PHP and WordPress development.
  • Experience with WordPress themes, plugins, Gutenberg/block editor and common marketing-site integrations.
  • Strong troubleshooting and debugging skills.
  • Experience working with Git-based version control.
  • Ability and willingness to work across different types of technical assignments rather than specializing exclusively in one area.
  • Resourceful and comfortable researching unfamiliar problems and identifying solutions independently.
  • Self-motivated, with the ability to take ownership of work and follow it through to completion.
  • Curious and eager to learn new technologies, platforms and approaches.
  • Familiarity with analytics, tagging and marketing integrations, including GA4/GTM, consent tools, A/B testing, email providers and CDPs.
  • Accessibility awareness, including WCAG fundamentals, and experience implementing accessible UI patterns.
  • Able to manage multiple priorities and shift between projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Collaborative, dependable and committed to producing high-quality work.
Nice-to-Have Skills and Qualifications
  • WooCommerce or Shopify experience, including checkout optimization, payment and shipping plugins, and catalog organization.
  • Comfort with WP-CLI, Composer, deployment automation and modern WordPress build pipelines.
  • Experience implementing WordPress hardening practices, including secure configuration, plugin governance and least-privilege access.
  • Familiarity with unit testing or automated regression testing.
  • Hands-on experience with Email on Acid or Litmus to create visual and brand consistency across email devices and clients.
You’ll Thrive Here If…
  • You enjoy building new digital experiences—and making existing ones work better.
  • You see an unfamiliar technical problem as something to investigate, not something to avoid.
  • You’re willing to dig into documentation, test possible solutions and ask thoughtful questions when needed.
  • You can move comfortably between development, maintenance, troubleshooting, analytics, tagging and email work.
  • You take ownership of your work and care about seeing it through from initial request to final QA.
  • You balance speed with thoughtful attention to security, accessibility, performance and quality.
  • You’re curious about AI and emerging technology while still bringing your own judgment and problem-solving skills to the work.
  • You believe the strongest solutions come from developers, strategists, designers and project managers working together.
