Interns typically work under the supervision of experienced developers and may assist with coding, testing, debugging, and designing web pages. This role provides valuable hands-on exposure to industry tools, programming languages, and best practices while helping interns develop their technical and teamwork skills. Successful completion of a web developer internship can enhance a candidate's resume and increase their chances of securing a full-time web development role.

What is a web developer internship?

In a web developer internship, you work with professional developers, designers, and project managers to support the development of a website and learn the skills of the trade. As an intern, you may assist with coding under the direction of a professional computer programmer, test existing code, format graphics for web use, or communicate with clients about the project. Your responsibilities may also involve testing new technology for potential use in the web development project. Some interns perform additional clerical duties as needed.

What are the typical projects and tasks assigned to a web developer intern, and how do they contribute to the overall team?

Web developer interns often work on a variety of tasks such as assisting with website updates, debugging code, creating new web pages, and implementing design changes under the guidance of senior developers. These projects allow interns to gain hands-on experience with web technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and sometimes frameworks like React or Angular. Interns usually collaborate closely with designers, back-end developers, and project managers, contributing to real-world projects that impact the organization's digital presence. This collaborative environment helps interns develop both technical skills and an understanding of professional workflows, setting a strong foundation for future career growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a web developer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Web Developer Intern, you need a solid understanding of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and a foundational grasp of web development principles, often supported by coursework or self-taught projects. Familiarity with version control systems like Git and exposure to frameworks such as React or Angular are highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, willingness to learn, and effective communication skills help interns collaborate and adapt in team environments. These skills are crucial for contributing to real-world projects, learning quickly, and building a successful foundation for a web development career.

Can I be a web developer internship with no experience?

Web developer internships often do not require prior professional experience and are designed for beginners. Candidates typically need basic knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and demonstrating a portfolio or personal projects can improve chances of acceptance.

How to get a web developer internship?

To secure a web developer internship, build a portfolio showcasing your projects, learn relevant skills such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks, and apply to internships through company websites, job boards, or university career centers. Having a basic understanding of version control tools like Git and a willingness to learn are also beneficial.

Job description

About Rundoo โ„น
Our mission is to empower independent supply stores with best-in-class technology. Think of your local hardware store or mom-and-pop nursery-these are our clients. From paint to lumber to flooring, over 200,000 such stores across the country sell over $1T of building materials annually using outdated, on-premises systems. We're aiming to help them modernize so that they can continue to thrive.
Backed by leading investors including Bessemer and CRV, we've raised $18M across three rounds and are growing quickly. Our team is made up of builders, sellers, and industry veterans with a shared goal: to bring modern technology to an overlooked industry.
About the role
You'll be based out of our Redwood City office and work in person with the rest of our engineering team. As a Software Engineer, you'll ship features end-to-end across our stack: a Go backend, a TypeScript/React web app, and React Native mobile apps. Your work goes directly to the supply-store owners and staff who run their businesses on Rundoo every day.
You'll report to one of our engineering leads and work in a small pod of about 4-5 engineers. You'll own clearly-scoped projects from start to rollout, get deep in the part of the product your pod owns, and build your system and product intuition with mentorship from senior engineers through pairing and code review. It's a good fit for someone 1-3 years into their career.
What you'll do as a Software Engineer at Rundoo
  • Ship features end-to-end, from the proto and backend logic to the web and mobile UI
  • Own small, clearly-scoped projects (typically 1-3 weeks) with limited direction, from scoping through rollout
  • Go deep in your pod's part of the product so you can fix arbitrary bugs and add new features with confidence
  • Align with PM and tech lead on what you're building and why, and write tickets clear enough for another engineer to pick up
  • Talk to clients directly, calling stores to research how they work and to get their feedback on what you've shipped
  • Write design docs for your features and reason about how your work interacts with adjacent systems
  • Review teammates' code and act on the feedback you get, keeping our codebase readable and maintainable
  • Spot broken team processes and fix them, automating manual work where it speeds up delivery

Requirements โ˜‘
  • 1-3 years of professional software engineering experience
  • Solid command of computer-science fundamentals and fluency in at least one production language
  • Comfort shipping features end-to-end and debugging across the stack
  • Based in (or willing to relocate to) the Bay Area and able to work in person 4 days a week in our Redwood City office

Bonus points
  • Experience with Go, TypeScript/React, or React Native
  • Experience at an early-stage startup, or another fast-moving environment
  • Familiarity with ERP, POS, payments, or other system-of-record software

Benefits
  • Full medical, dental, and vision coverage (100% of premiums for you, 50% for dependents)
  • Life Insurance
  • 401k with Betterment
  • Unlimited PTO with 10 company paid holidays
  • In-office gym
  • Daily team lunches
  • Learning materials and audiobook subscriptions

Compensation
  • Base Salary: $186K
  • Equity package of $101K / 0.0440% / 7,602 options
Meet some of the team
  • George: Studied computer science and math at Stanford; worked a couple internships at Meta + some startups in Denver; jaywalking ticket recipient
  • Santi: Studied CE and played varsity soccer at Waterloo: internships at Replicant and other Canadian startups
  • Vidya: Studied Computer Science at UC Berkeley; worked at Ironclad for 5 years as a Software Engineer and Engineering Manager; south Indian classical dancer
  • Umer: CS at NUS; interned at Visa and a couple of startups in Singapore. Has an identical twin
  • Jordan: Studied computer engineering at Waterloo; did internships at IBM, Rivian, and a couple startups; Played the Saxophone professionally for a while

Interview Process
  1. Intro Call - Meet a recruiter to learn more about each other (20 mins, remote)
  2. Live coding screen with Andrew (45 mins, remote)
  3. Take Home Assignment
  4. Onsite - A mix of technical and culture interviews with the team (~4 hours, in person)
