What is a web developer contract?

A Web Developer Contract is a legal agreement between a client and a web developer outlining the terms, responsibilities, deliverables, timeline, and payment for web development services. This contract protects both parties by clearly defining the scope of work, deadlines, and any intellectual property rights. It typically covers specifics such as website functionality, design, maintenance, and post-launch support. Having a contract helps to prevent misunderstandings and ensures that both the client and developer are aligned on expectations.

What are web developer contract jobs?

Web developer contract jobs involve the design or development of websites. In these positions, you work on different projects on a contract or freelance basis. Your duties depend on the type of development projects on which you work. As a front-end web developer, you work on the user interface, and your responsibilities focus on creating the visual and interactive elements of a web page or application. As a back-end developer, you may use SQL, PHP, or other languages to perform server-side development and connect the website to a database.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a web developer contractor?

To thrive as a Web Developer Contractor, you need strong proficiency in programming languages like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and relevant frameworks, supported by a portfolio of completed projects. Familiarity with version control systems such as Git, content management systems (CMS), and sometimes certifications like AWS Certified Developer can be valuable. Excellent problem-solving abilities, time management, and effective client communication are standout soft skills for this role. These capabilities are essential to deliver high-quality web solutions efficiently, meet client expectations, and adapt to diverse project requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by web developers working on a contract basis, and how can they be managed?

Contract web developers often encounter challenges such as rapidly adapting to new codebases, aligning with different teams' workflows, and managing client expectations within tight deadlines. Effectively communicating with stakeholders, clarifying project requirements early, and staying organized with project management tools can help mitigate these challenges. Additionally, being proactive in seeking feedback and documenting work thoroughly ensures smoother collaboration and successful project delivery.

About The Company:

Our client is an established financial services organization investing in the growth and modernization of its digital platforms. The company is focused on delivering secure, compliant, and user-friendly online experiences for clients, prospective customers, and internal business partners.

This role joins a collaborative Product Management organization that works closely with Marketing, Technology, Information Security, Compliance, Legal, and external vendors.

Job Description:

We are seeking a Senior Web Product Analyst to support the strategy, delivery, and continuous improvement of a portfolio of corporate websites and digital experiences. This individual will serve as a key connection point between business stakeholders and technical delivery teams, helping turn digital needs into clear requirements, prioritized user stories, and successful product releases.

The role will manage day-to-day web product activities, including backlog refinement, website enhancements, content management capabilities, integrations, testing, release coordination, and production support. The ideal candidate combines digital product management or business analysis experience with strong knowledge of websites, content management systems, Agile delivery, and stakeholder communication.

This is an immediate contract need supporting an active digital product roadmap. The position should be viewed as a contract opportunity rather than a guaranteed contract-to-hire role.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the development and execution of the product strategy and roadmap for enterprise websites and related digital tools.
  • Partner with Marketing, Technology, Compliance, Information Security, Legal, and business teams to define product needs and delivery priorities.
  • Lead requirements-gathering discussions and convert business objectives into detailed user stories, acceptance criteria, and functional requirements.
  • Maintain and prioritize the product backlog based on business value, technical dependencies, regulatory needs, and available resources.
  • Coordinate sprint planning, backlog refinement, release planning, and other Agile product management activities.
  • Manage enhancements involving website functionality, content workflows, forms, search tools, plugins, APIs, and third-party integrations.
  • Work with engineering teams and vendors to coordinate testing, production releases, and post-deployment validation.
  • Organize and support user acceptance testing, document results, and confirm that delivered functionality meets business expectations.
  • Monitor website performance, digital engagement, user feedback, and adoption trends to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Help ensure digital experiences meet accessibility, cybersecurity, privacy, SEO, performance, and regulatory standards.
  • Track project status, delivery timelines, risks, dependencies, and decisions while keeping stakeholders informed.
  • Support issue triage and coordinate the resolution of production defects or website-related concerns.
  • Maintain product documentation, release notes, process materials, business requirements, and governance records.
  • Assist with evaluating new digital capabilities, content technologies, marketing tools, and web platform enhancements.
  • Balance competing stakeholder requests while maintaining alignment with the broader product roadmap.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
  • At least 5 years of experience in digital product management, web product management, business analysis, product ownership, or a related role.
  • Demonstrated experience managing websites, enterprise web platforms, or customer-facing digital products.
  • Strong background gathering business requirements and translating them into technical user stories and acceptance criteria.
  • Experience working with software engineering or technology teams in an Agile environment.
  • Proficiency with Jira, Azure DevOps, or a comparable product and backlog management platform.
  • Strong stakeholder management experience, particularly when partnering with Marketing and Technology teams.
  • Experience coordinating product testing, user acceptance testing, releases, and production deployments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and stakeholder requests.
  • Analytical and problem-solving abilities with a focus on user experience and measurable business outcomes.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience within financial services, wealth management, banking, or another regulated industry.
  • Hands-on experience working with Contentful, WordPress, or similar content management systems.
  • Familiarity with Google Analytics or comparable digital analytics platforms.
  • Knowledge of search engine optimization, structured data, website architecture, Core Web Vitals, and digital performance optimization.
  • Understanding of generative engine optimization or AI-focused search optimization practices.
  • Experience supporting APIs, third-party integrations, forms, plugins, and digital marketing technologies.
  • Familiarity with website accessibility, security, governance, and compliance requirements.
  • Experience managing external vendors or web technology partners.

Additional Details:

  • Hybrid schedule requiring onsite attendance Monday through Thursday at a downtown Chicago office.
  • Friday may be worked remotely.
  • This is an immediate contract opening supporting an active web product portfolio.
  • The position partners closely with Product Management, Marketing, Technology, Information Security, Compliance, Legal, and business stakeholders.
  • No on-call responsibilities or travel are expected.
  • Interview process includes a hiring manager discussion, team interview, and final decision.
  • Candidates should be prepared to discuss websites or digital products they have personally managed.
  • Candidates should also be able to provide examples of translating business needs into technical user stories for development teams.

Perks:

  • Opportunity to manage and improve highly visible enterprise websites and digital products.
  • Direct collaboration with senior stakeholders across Marketing, Product, Technology, Security, and Compliance.
  • Exposure to website strategy, CMS platforms, analytics, integrations, SEO, and digital optimization initiatives.
  • Ability to influence product roadmaps and improve user experiences across multiple digital touchpoints.
  • Work on meaningful projects within a regulated, professionally structured environment.
  • Hybrid schedule with one remote day each week.
  • Opportunity to contribute immediately to an active digital transformation and product enhancement roadmap.
