How much do web developer and designer jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 16, 2026, the average hourly pay for web developer and designer in Madison, WI is $45.50, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $34.90 and $55.00 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Who gets paid more, a web designer or a developer?

Web developers generally earn higher salaries than web designers because they often have more technical skills, such as coding in languages like JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, and may work on complex functionalities. However, salaries can vary based on experience, location, and specialization, with developers typically commanding higher pay in most markets.

What are Web Developers and Designers?

Web Developers and Designers are professionals who create and maintain websites. Web Developers focus on the technical aspects, such as coding, functionality, and performance, using languages like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and more. Web Designers concentrate on the visual elements, including layout, color schemes, typography, and user experience. Often, these roles overlap, and some professionals handle both the design and development aspects to ensure a website is attractive, user-friendly, and fully functional. Their combined skills help businesses and individuals establish a strong online presence.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Web Developer and Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Web Developer and Designer, you need proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, responsive design principles, and a solid understanding of UX/UI concepts, often supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with content management systems (such as WordPress), version control (like Git), and design tools (such as Adobe Creative Suite or Figma) is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, strong problem-solving, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities are vital for creating visually appealing, functional, and user-centered websites that meet client needs and perform well across platforms.

How much do web designers get paid?

Web designers' salaries vary based on experience, location, and skill level, but the median annual pay in many regions ranges from $50,000 to $75,000. Entry-level designers typically earn less, while experienced professionals with skills in graphic design, HTML, CSS, and design tools can earn higher salaries or freelance income.

How do Web Developers and Designers typically collaborate with other team members during a project?

Web Developers and Designers often work closely with project managers, content creators, and UX/UI specialists to ensure that both the functionality and aesthetics of a website meet client expectations. Regular meetings and collaborative tools are used to align on project goals, timelines, and feedback. Communication is key, as developers translate design concepts into code and designers provide input to ensure the user interface remains intuitive and visually appealing throughout the development process.

Web Programmers primarily focus on coding and building web applications through programming languages. Both roles often collaborate but serve distinct purposes in web projects.

Can you be a web developer and designer?

Yes, many web developers also have design skills, allowing them to handle both coding and visual aspects of websites. Combining these roles can improve workflow and consistency, often requiring knowledge of programming languages like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and design tools such as Adobe Photoshop or Figma.

Is AI replacing web devs?

AI tools are increasingly automating certain tasks in web development and design, such as code generation and layout creation, but they do not fully replace web developers and designers. These professionals are still essential for complex problem-solving, customization, and user experience design, often using AI as a complementary tool to improve efficiency. Staying updated with new technologies and developing skills in both coding and design remain important for web development careers.
