What is a web designer frontend developer?

A Web Designer Frontend Developer is a professional who creates the visual layout and interactive elements of websites using languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. They are responsible for designing user interfaces that are both attractive and easy to use, ensuring that websites look good and function smoothly across different devices and browsers. While web designers focus on the aesthetics and user experience, frontend developers bring those designs to life with code and make sure the site is responsive and efficient. Often, a Web Designer Frontend Developer combines both roles, handling the creative and technical aspects of building a website.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a web designer frontend developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Web Designer Frontend Developer, you need a solid grasp of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, responsive design, and a portfolio showcasing your work, often backed by a degree or relevant certifications. Familiarity with frameworks such as React or Vue.js, design tools like Adobe XD or Figma, and version control systems like Git is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, strong communication, and problem-solving abilities set standout professionals apart in this role. These combined skills ensure the development of visually appealing, user-friendly, and high-performing websites that meet client and business needs.

How does a web designer frontend developer typically collaborate with backend developers and other team members during a project?

Web Designer Frontend Developers work closely with backend developers, UX/UI designers, and project managers to ensure seamless integration of design and functionality. They translate design mockups into responsive, interactive interfaces and communicate regularly with backend teams to connect APIs and data sources. Effective collaboration often involves participating in agile sprints, code reviews, and daily stand-up meetings to address challenges and align on project goals. This teamwork is essential for delivering cohesive, user-friendly web applications that meet both aesthetic and technical requirements.

What is the difference between Web Designer Frontend Developer vs Web Developer?

Web Developers have a broader scope, often handling both frontend and backend development, including server-side logic. While there is overlap, Web Designer Frontend Developers emphasize design and user experience, whereas Web Developers cover the entire development stack.

Employment Type: Full-time

Clearance / Background: Ability to successfully complete required federal background investigation (MUST BE A US CITIZEN)

Position Overview

We are seeking a Web Designer (Docusaurus) to support web properties and documentation portals for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. This role focuses on designing, building, and maintaining Docusaurus-based websites that serve both Veterans and internal VA stakeholders.

You will work closely with product owners, content writers, developers, and UX stakeholders to create accessible, intuitive, and visually consistent web experiences that follow Section 508, WCAG, and federal branding guidelines.

This is a hands-on role that blends UI/UX design, front-end implementation, and documentation site structure/organization.

Key Responsibilities:

Docusaurus Site Design & Maintenance

Design, configure, and maintain Docusaurus-based documentation sites and portals.

Build and refine page layouts, sidebars, navigation, and content structure for clear content discovery.

Implement and maintain reusable page templates and component documentation pages (e.g., common UI components, onboarding guides, knowledge base articles).

UI/UX & Visual Design

Create clean, responsive, and accessible UI layouts for documentation and informational sites.

Apply strong typography, color, spacing, and layout principles while aligning with VA and federal branding standards.

Collaborate with stakeholders to translate requirements and wireframes into production-ready Docusaurus pages.

Accessibility & Usability (Government/Federal Context)

Ensure all designs and implementations meet Section 508 and WCAG accessibility standards.

Design with Veteran users and internal VA staff in mind, optimizing for clarity, readability, and ease of use.

Partner with product owners and QA to test for accessibility, responsiveness, and usability across devices and browsers.

Content Structure & Information Architecture

Organize content into intuitive hierarchies, navigation menus, and documentation groupings.

Improve content discoverability through thoughtful site structure, naming conventions, and navigation flows.

Support content owners in migrating, updating, and refactoring existing documentation to align with new structures.

Collaboration & Delivery in a Federal Environment

Work within federal processes, documentation requirements, and review cycles.

Participate in Agile ceremonies, design reviews, and stakeholder sessions.

Provide clear documentation and handoffs for changes to content, navigation, and UI patterns.

Required QualificationsHands-on experience designing and maintaining Docusaurus sites, including:

Configuring sidebars, navigation, and routing.

Working with Markdown/MDX content, layout components, and themes.

Strong web/UI design skills, demonstrated through a portfolio of:

Clean, responsive, and accessible layouts.

Effective use of typography, color, and spacing.

Solid understanding of Section 508, WCAG, and accessibility best practices for government-facing sites.

Proficiency with core front-end technologies:

HTML5, CSS3, and modern layout techniques (flexbox, grid).

Basic React/JavaScript concepts (components, props, state, JSX), sufficient to work effectively within Docusaurus.

Experience creating or updating documentation portals, design systems, or component libraries.

Ability to work effectively with federal stakeholders, including:

Navigating feedback loops, approvals, and documentation requirements.

Communicating design decisions clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Strong attention to detail, with a focus on performance, maintainability, and consistency across pages and sections.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience supporting the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs or another federal agency.

Experience designing and building React-based front-end applications (e.g., SPAs with React and a utility-first CSS framework such as Tailwind CSS).

Familiarity with:

Designing analytics dashboards, admin portals, or internal tools.

Documentation for reusable UI components and APIs (e.g., documenting React components, integration guides, onboarding docs).

Exposure to cloud-based environments (e.g., AWS) and modern DevOps practices (CI/CD, containerized workflows).

Experience collaborating with engineers on:

Performance optimization (page load, rendering).

API-driven UIs and integration patterns.

Comfortable working in Agile/Scrum environments and contributing to iterative improvements in UX and content structure.

Desired Skills & Attributes

Strong problem-solving mindset and willingness to own end-to-end UX for documentation and web experiences.

Ability to balance visual polish with practical constraints (federal standards, timelines, and review cycles).
