What is a web designer developer?

Web Designer Developers are professionals who combine the skills of web design and web development to create visually appealing, user-friendly, and functional websites. They are responsible for both the aesthetics (layout, color schemes, typography) and the technical aspects (coding, functionality, performance) of websites. This hybrid role involves using design tools, such as Adobe Creative Suite, and programming languages, like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Web Designer Developers often work closely with clients to understand their needs and deliver a cohesive online experience that meets both design and technical requirements.

What does a web designer developer do?

A web designer developer combines the responsibilities of a website designer and a website programmer into an all-inclusive position. In this role, your duties are to design a website by planning its overall concept, from its color scheme to its layout, and then develop the site by writing the code that makes your design come to fruition online. To become a web designer developer, you need expert knowledge of website coding languages like HTML, CSS, and PHP as well as design and graphics-making skills using programs like Adobe Photoshop. Web designer developers may work part-time or full-time for organizations to create and maintain their websites, or they can work on a freelance basis designing and coding websites for clients.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a web designer developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Web Designer Developer, you need strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and design principles, often supported by a relevant degree or portfolio of work. Familiarity with tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, and content management systems (such as WordPress), as well as knowledge of responsive frameworks, is commonly expected. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help differentiate top professionals in this role. These skills and qualities ensure the creation of visually appealing, user-friendly, and technically sound websites that meet client and user needs.

How do web designer developers typically collaborate with other team members during a project?

Web Designer Developers often work closely with project managers, UX/UI designers, and back-end developers to ensure that websites are visually appealing, user-friendly, and function seamlessly. Collaboration usually involves regular meetings to discuss project goals, design mockups, and technical requirements. Effective communication and the ability to interpret feedback from non-technical stakeholders are key, as Web Designer Developers bridge the gap between design and functionality. Using collaborative tools like Figma, Slack, and version control systems helps streamline the workflow and maintain project alignment.

Position Overview
At Autodesk AEC, we help teams meet the world's rapidly expanding building and infrastructure needs while making design and construction more predictable, safe, and sustainable. The Construction Field Delivery team is transforming how projects are delivered through a connected productivity platform that is intuitive, scalable, AI-driven, and seamlessly accessible across mobile, and web.
We are seeking a Senior Principal Designer to help shape the next generation of construction experiences within Autodesk Forma. You will partner closely with Product, Engineering, and executive leadership to shape strategy, influence outcomes, and elevate experience quality across everything we deliver. Through strong systems thinking, storytelling, and design craft, you will inspire cross-functional teams and help define how technology improves the delivery of large commercial and civil projects in the real world.
Travel: approximately quarterly across North America and other international locations.
To be considered, when applying, you must include a portfolio with access/password on your resume.*
Responsibilities
  • Apply deep product, platform, user-centered design, and AEC industry expertise to influence product strategy, anticipate emerging customer needs, and identify opportunities where new technologies can deliver meaningful customer value

  • Translate complex user needs and business priorities into clear, actionable experience direction and system frameworks
  • Communicate design vision and strategy with clarity and impact through effective storytelling, leading presentations and discussions that build trust, inform decisions, and engage diverse, cross-functional audiences
  • Support innovation and organizational learning by introducing new design practices, exploring emerging frameworks, and helping teams improve the pace, quality, and ambition of design outcomes
  • Partner with designers, researchers, product managers, and engineering leaders across multiple time zones to guide the translation of design vision into feasible, end-to-end experiences aligned with platform and technical constraints

Minimum Qualifications
  • 12+ years of professional experience as a UX design individual contributor and/or design leader
  • Experience designing SaaS products across multiple device types and software platforms
  • Strong communication, facilitation, and storytelling skills, with the ability to influence across UX, Product Management, Engineering, and Analytics
  • Proficiency with industry-standard design tools such as Figma and AI-enabled prototyping tools
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in larger, cross-team environments
  • Online portfolio showcasing relevant experience and impact

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated interest in mentoring and supporting the growth of other designers
  • Experience driving design vision involving innovative technologies (such as agentic experiences, mobile, or smart devices)
