Web Craft information

What is a web craft?

Web Craft jobs refer to roles that involve designing, developing, and maintaining websites or web applications. These positions typically require skills in coding languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, as well as an understanding of user experience (UX) and web design principles. Web Craft professionals may work as front-end or back-end developers, web designers, or full-stack developers. Their main goal is to create functional, visually appealing, and user-friendly websites tailored to client or business needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a web craft professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Web Developer, you need a solid understanding of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and web development frameworks, often supported by a degree in computer science or relevant certifications. Familiarity with tools like version control systems (e.g., Git), content management systems (e.g., WordPress), and design software is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with teams and deliver user-friendly solutions. These competencies are crucial for building reliable, scalable, and visually appealing websites that meet client and user needs.

How does a web craft professional typically collaborate with designers and developers during a project?

As a Web Craft professional, collaboration with designers and developers is a crucial part of the job. You’ll often work closely with designers to ensure that the user interface is both visually appealing and technically feasible. At the same time, you’ll partner with developers to translate design concepts into functional, responsive web solutions, troubleshooting issues and optimizing performance along the way. Regular communication, participation in team meetings, and use of project management tools help ensure everyone stays aligned throughout the development process.

What is the difference between Web Craft vs Web Developer?

AspectWeb CraftWeb Developer
CredentialsTypically no formal certifications required; focus on skills and portfolioOften requires a degree in computer science or related field; certifications like HTML, CSS, JavaScript
Work EnvironmentFreelance, small agencies, or in-house teams; project-based workIn-house, agency, or freelance roles; involved in coding and development
Industry UsageUsed broadly for craft-based or artistic web workCommonly used for technical web development roles

Web Craft and Web Developer roles often overlap, but Web Craft emphasizes artistic and design skills with less focus on coding, while Web Developer roles are more technical, involving coding and programming. Both roles are essential in creating websites, but their focus and required skills differ.

Is web design a high-paying job?

Web design can be a well-paying profession, especially for experienced designers with strong portfolios and skills in tools like Adobe Creative Suite or coding languages such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Salaries vary based on experience, location, and whether the work is freelance or employed by a company, with senior roles often earning higher wages.

Key responsibilities

  • Own the design of marketing pages, landing pages, and growth surfaces end-to-end.

  • Create and own the CMS design system, including templates, components, and patterns.

  • Collaborate with front-end engineers to ship pages quickly and at a high quality bar.

Job description

About the role
We're looking for a Web Designer to own the design of Perplexity's marketing and landing pages. You'll be the person who makes sure every page we ship looks and feels like it belongs to one of the most exciting AI products in the world - clear, beautiful, and fast.
You're a great designer first and foremost, with the visual taste to set the bar for our web presence. But you also understand how modern web pages get built and maintained. As page volume grows across consumer and enterprise, a big part of this role is making our landing page system more self-serve internally: you'll create and own the design side of our CMS so the rest of the company can spin up on-brand pages without a designer in the loop every time.
You'll report into the Brand/Creative Studio team and work closely with Growth, Product Marketing, Brand, and our front-end engineers.
What you'll do
  • Own the design of marketing pages, landing pages, and growth surfaces end-to-end - you're the DRI for web craft
  • Create and own the CMS design system: the templates, components, and patterns that let teams build on-brand pages themselves
  • Partner with Growth and Product Marketing to translate business goals into compelling, high-converting page designs
  • Work with Brand to keep visual consistency across every web touchpoint
  • Collaborate directly with front-end engineers to ship pages quickly and at a high quality bar, including the ongoing migration off Framer
  • Bring a strong point of view on layout, typography, motion, and interaction design for the web
  • Raise the floor on self-serve page creation so the design team can focus on the highest-craft work
What we're looking for
  • A strong portfolio of web and marketing design work - landing pages, campaign pages, product marketing sites - that shows you're a designer first
  • Excellent visual design skills with a clear sense of brand, typography, and composition
  • Hands-on experience designing within and for CMS / templating systems, and an instinct for building scalable, self-serve page systems
  • Experience at the intersection of brand and growth - you understand conversion without sacrificing craft
  • Comfort working fast and iterating in real time alongside engineers
  • Fluency in Figma and a solid understanding of responsive design, accessibility, and web performance
  • A clear opinion on what makes a great web page, and the ability to articulate why
Nice to have
  • Front-end development knowledge (HTML, CSS, and enough JS to prototype, tweak, and ship)
  • Background in brand or marketing design at a consumer tech company
  • Familiarity with SEO fundamentals and how design decisions affect discoverability
  • Motion design skills for web interactions and micro-animations
