What does a Web Application Firewall Engineer do?

A Web Application Firewall Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and managing web application firewalls (WAFs) to protect websites and applications from cyber threats such as SQL injection, cross-site scripting, and other web-based attacks. They monitor traffic, analyze vulnerabilities, and configure firewall rules to ensure security policies are enforced effectively. Additionally, they may collaborate with development and operations teams to integrate security best practices and respond to incidents involving web application security.

What are the main challenges Web Application Firewall Engineers face when implementing and tuning WAF solutions in dynamic environments?

Web Application Firewall Engineers often encounter challenges such as accurately configuring rules to block malicious traffic without causing false positives that disrupt legitimate user activity. In rapidly changing environments, frequent application updates and new features can require constant adjustment of WAF policies to maintain protection without hindering performance or user experience. Additionally, collaborating with development and DevOps teams is crucial to ensure that security measures align with business needs and do not impede agile deployment cycles.
