What are Web Application Engineers?

Web Application Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain web-based software applications. They work with programming languages like JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, and often use frameworks such as React, Angular, or Vue.js for the front end, and Node.js, Python, or Ruby on the back end. Their responsibilities include building user interfaces, integrating APIs, ensuring application security, and optimizing performance. Web Application Engineers collaborate with designers, product managers, and other developers to deliver robust and scalable web solutions. They play a crucial role in bringing interactive and dynamic websites and web apps to life.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Web Application Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Web Application Engineer, you need strong programming skills in languages like JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and frameworks such as React or Angular, usually supported by a relevant degree or experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure), and continuous integration tools is typically required. Problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating and addressing complex technical challenges. These skills ensure the development of robust, scalable, and user-friendly web applications that meet business and user needs.

How does a Web Application Engineer typically collaborate with designers and backend developers during a project?

Web Application Engineers work closely with both designers and backend developers to ensure seamless user experiences and functional applications. They translate design mockups into interactive web interfaces, often providing feedback to designers about feasibility and performance considerations. Collaboration with backend developers is essential for integrating APIs and data services, troubleshooting issues, and optimizing application performance. Effective communication and teamwork are crucial, as these roles often work together in agile sprints or regular stand-up meetings to align on project goals and address challenges promptly.

Job description

Senior Software Engineer, Reporting Experience

Are you an experienced engineer ready to tackle complex reporting challenges with innovative solutions? Do you thrive in collaborative environments where your work can shape product design and team culture? Are you excited to apply your expertise in modern frameworks and eager to leverage AI-enhanced tools to drive change in the fintech industry? If so, Ridgeline may be the place for you!

As a Ridgeline Senior Product Engineer on our Reporting team, you'll have a unique opportunity to build high-quality, complex, industry-defining applications for our Reporting solution. Our team of engineers is building from scratch with cutting-edge technologies in a fast-moving, creative, and progressive work environment. You'll be encouraged to think outside the box, bringing your vision, passion, and insights to drive advancements that impact both our team and the industry.

As part of the Ridgeline Reporting team, you'll help shape our culture, make a big impact on a small team, and learn what it takes to build a successful company. Our team is committed to creating a lasting impact on the investment management industry, leveraging AI and leading development practices to bring transformative change.

At Ridgeline, how we work matters as much as what we build. Ridgeliners act like owners, choose growth over comfort, and communicate with transparency. We assume positive intent, bias toward action, and bring solutions—not just problems. We celebrate wins, learn from setbacks, and thrive in a resilient, collaborative, high-performing culture. If this excites you, we'd love to meet you.

You must be work authorized in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship.

The impact you will have:

  • Contribute your design skills and technical expertise to a team where design, strategy, and engineering collaborate closely
  • Engage in the entire software development process, from requirements gathering and design reviews to implementing new Reporting products or features
  • Shape a developing tech stack that leverages modern front-end frameworks like React
  • Coach, mentor, and inspire teams of product engineers that are responsible for delivering high performing, secure enterprise applications
  • Think creatively, take ownership of problems, seek solutions, and communicate clearly throughout the process
  • Foster a collaborative environment rooted in learning, teaching, and transparency

What we look for:

  • A degree in Computer Science, Information Science, or a related discipline
  • 5+ years in a software engineering position with a history of architecting and designing new products and technologies
  • 5+ years of experience building web front ends using technologies like React, Jest, JavaScript, and TypeScript and proficiency in one or more of the following languages: Kotlin, Java or Python.
  • Strong understanding of the importance of automated testing at all levels
  • Willingness to learn about new technologies while simultaneously developing expertise in a business domain/problem space
  • Ability to manage short-term deliverables while maintaining a long-term, strategic perspective
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and effective communication abilities
  • Serious interest in having fun at work

Bonus:

  • Backend experience with RESTful/GraphQL APIs
  • Familiarity with Docker and containerization
  • Knowledge of AWS services and infrastructure
  • Experience in an Agile development environment
  • Background in investment or asset management
  • Knowledge of economics or finance
