What is web application development?

Web application development is the process of creating software applications that run on web servers and can be accessed through a web browser. It involves designing, building, testing, and maintaining applications that use technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and server-side languages like Python, PHP, or Java. Web apps can range from simple websites to complex platforms like e-commerce sites or online tools. The goal is to deliver interactive, user-friendly experiences that work across multiple devices and browsers.

How do web application developers typically collaborate with designers and backend engineers during a project?

Web application developers frequently work closely with both UI/UX designers and backend engineers to ensure seamless integration of frontend interfaces with server-side logic. Collaboration often involves regular meetings, shared project management tools, and code reviews to align on functionality and design requirements. Developers may participate in sprint planning sessions and use platforms like GitHub for version control, facilitating smooth communication and efficient handoffs between teams. This collaborative environment helps ensure the final product is user-friendly, visually appealing, and performs reliably across different devices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a web application developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Web Application Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages such as JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, along with a solid understanding of web frameworks and a relevant computer science degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with tools like version control systems (e.g., Git), front-end frameworks (such as React or Angular), and back-end technologies (like Node.js or Django) is typically required. Creative problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These abilities ensure robust, user-friendly applications and efficient collaboration within development teams.

Estenda Solutions

$110K - $125K/yr

Full-time

Job description

We are looking for a Web Application Software Developer who can build reliable, usable web applications and help teams turn healthcare problems into working software. Development at Estenda covers the whole product: user interfaces, APIs, data, and the workflows that tie them together. This role focuses on front-end development.

You will build new digital health products and improve existing ones, working closely with business analysts and product owners to turn requirements into technical solutions. Our stack centers on React and .NET, with deployments to Azure.

What You'll Do
  • Build new digital health products and improve existing ones.

  • Learn the science and understand the users so you can design the right solution.

  • Work closely with business analysts and product owners to turn requirements into technical specs.

  • Design and build solutions with a cloud- and security-first approach.

  • Participate in every stage of frontend development: design, code, review, test, integration, debugging, deployment, and maintenance of user interfaces.

  • Participate in code reviews and PR-based workflows, and help uphold coding standards and architectural boundaries.

  • Mentor other engineers through pairing, reviews, and shared knowledge, and promote good practices across the team.

Required Qualifications
  • A 4-year degree in a technical field, preferably Computer Science or a related discipline.

  • 5+ years of frontend development experience with React.js, modern JavaScript/TypeScript, and CSS frameworks.

  • Strong experience building component-based UIs and consuming REST APIs with a modern framework.

  • Proven technical skills: the ability to work with APIs, query databases, and solve common problems.

  • Experience with authentication and authorization patterns (JWT, RBAC, API keys).

  • Strong troubleshooting and debugging skills.

  • Strong communication skills — verbal, written, and presentation — with the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • A passion for learning and the ability to design and build solutions quickly.

  • Empathy: you need to understand the user to be effective.

  • The ability to manage your time and get things done without cutting quality.

  • Comfort with change as a constant.

What Makes You Stand Out
  • Experience in a regulated industry, especially healthcare, pharmaceuticals, or medtech.
  • Prior experience with SMART on FHIR and EMR/EHR platform integrations.

This is a front-end software development position, but full stack knowledge is beneficial.
  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure across core services (Web Apps, APIM, VNet, SQL), including securing cloud environments, deployment, monitoring, and scaling.
  • Experience deploying and managing web applications (Azure with Bicep or Azure CLI preferred; other platforms considered).
  • Experience building secure APIs in C# and ASP.NET Core, including JWT, RBAC, and API keys.
  • Working knowledge of ASP.NET Core middleware, route handlers, and API layer patterns.
