At Subway, we are not standing still. We are building.

This is a business focused on what matters most: growing franchisee profitability, strengthening our brand and creating long-term value. The people who thrive here are the ones who want to make a real impact.

This is your chance to be part of whats next.

Position Overview

The Tech Lead, Web (React) is the senior technical authority for Subway's guest-facing web experience, built on React and Next.js. Reporting to the Sr. Development Manager, this role sets the technical direction for the web squad, writes and reviews production code daily, and ensures the team ships reliable, performant, and accessible experiences on subway.com and adjacent guest-facing web surfaces. This is a hands-on senior engineer role first the Tech Lead earns credibility through code, mentors engineers through pairing and review, and translates product and design intent into sound front-end architecture, while partnering closely with the Sr. Development Manager on delivery planning and with the Middleware team on API contracts. This role carries technical leadership without formal people-management authority.

Responsibilities

Design, build, and ship production React/Next.js features across subway.com and adjacent web surfaces writing high-quality, well-tested code and setting the technical bar for the rest of the web squad through direct hands-on contribution.

Own front-end architecture decisions for the web platform component structure, state management, rendering strategy (SSR/SSG/ISR), and performance patterns ensuring consistency with the shared component library and design system.

Lead code review and technical mentorship for the web squad: set standards for code quality, testing coverage, and PR hygiene; pair with engineers to level up React and Next.js proficiency across the team.

Partner with the Sr. Development Manager on sprint planning, technical estimation, and risk identification; break down feature and platform work including AEM headless and Edge Delivery Services integration into scoped, sequenced engineering tasks.

Own web platform reliability and performance: monitor Core Web Vitals budgets in CI, triage production incidents on guest-facing web surfaces, drive root cause analysis and remediation in partnership with Middleware and DevOps, and champion AI-assisted development adoption across the web squad.

Qualifications

Deep, hands-on expertise in React and Next.js component architecture, hooks, state management (Zustand or equivalent), SSR/SSG/ISR rendering strategies, and performance optimization.

Strong command of modern TypeScript and front-end tooling (bundlers, linting, testing frameworks) in a production, high-traffic consumer web context.

Experience consuming headless CMS content via GraphQL or REST; AEM Content Fragments and Edge Delivery Services experience strongly preferred.

Working knowledge of feature flagging (LaunchDarkly), experimentation/A-B testing (Adobe Target or equivalent), and real-user monitoring (Quantum Metric or equivalent) in a production web application.

Demonstrated commitment to AI-assisted development: active daily use of AI coding tools and the ability to model and coach effective adoption within a team.

Solid understanding of web accessibility (WCAG/ADA) and Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP, CLS) as enforced engineering constraints, not afterthoughts.

Proven ability to lead technically without formal people-management authority influencing through code quality, architectural clarity, and consistent, credible technical judgment.

Effective at breaking down ambiguous product requirements into clear, sequenced engineering work for a squad of engineers.

Clear written and verbal communicator comfortable presenting technical trade-offs to the Sr. Development Manager, Director, and cross-functional product partners.

Collaborative and approachable a go-to resource for other engineers on the team, with a track record of raising the technical bar through mentorship rather than gatekeeping.

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).

58 years of professional software engineering experience with a strong foundation in React and modern front-end architecture; prior experience operating at a senior or lead level on a React-based production consumer-facing web application.

Demonstrated experience owning technical direction for a feature area or squad, including architecture decisions and code quality standards.

Experience partnering with backend/API teams to define and consume contracts for a production web application.

Experience in QSR, retail, or consumer-facing digital commerce preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience migrating a web application to or operating within an AEM/Edge Delivery Services architecture.

Experience mentoring or informally leading other engineers without direct people-management responsibility.

Experience partnering with product and design organizations in a squad- or pod-based agile delivery model.

Experience with monorepo tooling and shared component libraries across multiple web properties.

Background in QSR, retail, or consumer digital commerce with high-traffic ordering or loyalty experiences.

Additional coursework, certifications, or demonstrated depth in front-end engineering or web performance is a plus.
