What is a web accessibility SME?

A Web Accessibility SME (Subject Matter Expert) is a professional who specializes in ensuring that websites and digital content are accessible to people with disabilities. They possess in-depth knowledge of accessibility standards such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and relevant legal requirements. Their responsibilities typically include auditing websites for accessibility issues, advising on best practices, and helping development teams create inclusive digital experiences. By leveraging their expertise, organizations can improve usability for all users and comply with legal and ethical standards.

How does a web accessibility SME typically collaborate with designers and developers during a project?

A Web Accessibility SME works closely with both designers and developers throughout the project lifecycle to ensure accessibility standards are met. This often involves reviewing wireframes and prototypes to identify potential accessibility barriers early, providing best practices and recommendations, and conducting code reviews or audits during development. The SME may also facilitate training sessions, answer technical questions, and help teams interpret WCAG guidelines in the context of the project. Regular communication and documentation are key to ensuring an inclusive user experience and smooth implementation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a web accessibility SME, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Web Accessibility SME, you need in-depth knowledge of accessibility standards (such as WCAG), experience with web development, and often a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with accessibility evaluation tools (like Axe or WAVE), screen readers, and compliance management platforms is typically required. Strong communication, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills help in educating teams and advocating for inclusive design. These skills ensure digital products are accessible to all users, maintain legal compliance, and improve user experience.
