What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weather Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weather Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (such as Python, C++, or Java), a solid understanding of meteorological concepts, and typically a degree in computer science, atmospheric science, or a related field. Experience with data processing tools, APIs, numerical weather prediction models, and cloud computing platforms is highly valued. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with scientists and translating complex data into actionable software. These skills ensure the development of accurate, reliable tools that support weather forecasting and decision-making across industries.

How do Weather Software Engineers typically collaborate with meteorologists and data scientists?

Weather Software Engineers often work closely with meteorologists and data scientists to develop and refine tools for weather prediction, data analysis, and visualization. This collaboration involves gathering requirements, translating scientific models into reliable code, and iteratively improving applications based on feedback. Regular meetings and agile workflows are common, ensuring that software solutions align with both scientific goals and operational needs. Effective communication and a willingness to learn from interdisciplinary colleagues are key to success in this collaborative environment.

What does a Weather Software Engineer do?

A Weather Software Engineer designs, develops, and maintains software systems that process, analyze, and visualize meteorological data. They work with large datasets from weather sensors, satellites, and models to create reliable forecasting and monitoring tools. Their work supports meteorologists, researchers, and organizations that rely on accurate weather information for decision-making. Weather Software Engineers often use programming languages like Python, C++, or Java and may integrate machine learning or cloud computing technologies. They play a crucial role in improving weather prediction and public safety.

What is the difference between Weather Software Engineer vs Meteorologist?

AspectWeather Software EngineerMeteorologist
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field; programming skillsBachelor's or higher in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or related field; weather modeling knowledge
Work EnvironmentTech companies, weather data firms, software development teamsResearch institutions, TV stations, government agencies, fieldwork
Industry UsageDevelops weather prediction software, data visualization toolsAnalyzes weather patterns, forecasts, and climate data

Weather Software Engineers focus on creating and maintaining software related to weather data, requiring programming skills and technical expertise. Meteorologists analyze weather patterns and provide forecasts, often working in research or media. Both roles are essential in the weather industry but differ in their core responsibilities and skill sets.

Job description

Entry-Level Software Engineer

Job Overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic Software Engineer to join our team. You will assist with coding, testing, and debugging advanced weather data systems while working closely with senior developers. If you are interested in weather and aerospace technology and looking for an opportunity to grow, we want to hear from you.

About PlanetiQ

PlanetiQ is a privately owned space-technology company providing the highest-quality GNSS radio occultation (RO) data from our own satellite constellation. Our data powers accurate weather and climate forecasts and helps protect communities from severe weather. Founded in 2015, we serve government, defense, and industry leaders worldwide, and in 2025 were awarded NOAA NESDIS's largest ever, $24.3M weather satellite data contract. We are known for solving tough problems, building groundbreaking technology, and setting the standard for precision and reliability in atmospheric sensing.

This role is backend-focused with a tech environment built around Linux, Python, Flask, PostgreSQL, SQLite, and SQLAlchemy. Additionally, we offer opportunities for frontend development using React and JavaScript, and our cloud infrastructure is centered on AWS, Docker, and Kubernetes.

Role

  • Write clean, testable, and efficient code
  • Collaborate with senior engineers to design new features
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and upgrade existing applications
  • Participate in code reviews
  • Analyze and develop software prototypes and/or applications as part of a team
  • Participate in the complete software development lifecycle: feature concept, design, development, testing, and operational support

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS degree in a scientific or engineering field, with a BS in Computer Science preferred; BA degrees will be considered with relevant work experience
  • 0-3 years professional experience
    • Recent graduates must have a 3.0 GPA or higher
  • Proficiency in the Python programming language
  • Proficiency with SQL and relational data modeling
  • Must be able to program without use of AI tools and demonstrate that ability in an interview

Preferred Qualifications

A well-qualified candidate will also have experience in two or more of the following specific areas:

  • Experience with remote sensing data or applications
  • Some front-end experience, especially with the React framework
  • Proficient in using git or other tools for version control
  • Experience with Kubernetes
  • Familiarity with database technologies such as PostgreSQL or SQLite
  • Familiarity with back-end frameworks such as Flask or SQLAlchemy
  • Familiarity with AWS or other cloud computing platforms

Work Environment

  • Location: Hybrid, on-site in Golden, CO with one day per week working from home and flexible working hours
  • Travel Requirements: None

Benefits and Compensation

  • Base salary: $70k-120k, commensurate with the candidate's relevant work experience and their demonstrated performance during the interview process
  • Equity in the form of stock options
  • Annual performance-based bonus
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance with fully-paid premiums for employee and family
  • 401(k) plan
  • 33 days of PTO per year, including holidays and sick days
