How much do weather radar engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 12, 2026, the average yearly pay for weather radar engineer in the United States is $80,500.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $79,000.00 and $82,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weather Radar Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weather Radar Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, radar systems, and signal processing, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with radar software, hardware troubleshooting tools, and certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE) licensure are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills ensure the development, maintenance, and optimization of weather radar systems crucial for accurate meteorological data and public safety.

What does a Weather Radar Engineer do?

A Weather Radar Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, maintaining, and optimizing radar systems used to detect and monitor weather conditions. They work with complex hardware and software to ensure accurate weather data collection and analysis, which helps meteorologists forecast weather and track severe storms. Their role often involves troubleshooting radar equipment, integrating new technologies, and collaborating with scientists and other engineers to improve the performance and reliability of weather radar systems.

What are some common challenges Weather Radar Engineers face when integrating new radar technology into existing systems?

Weather Radar Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating new technologies into legacy radar systems, such as ensuring compatibility between old and new hardware, managing software updates without disrupting ongoing operations, and calibrating sensors for accurate data collection. Effective communication with multidisciplinary teams—including software developers, meteorologists, and maintenance staff—is crucial to address integration issues and maintain system reliability. Staying updated with the latest industry standards and regulatory requirements also helps ensure smooth transitions and optimal system performance.

What is the difference between Weather Radar Engineer vs Meteorologist?

AspectWeather Radar EngineerMeteorologist
Required CredentialsBachelor's in engineering, physics, or related field; specialized radar trainingBachelor's or higher in meteorology, atmospheric science, or related field; often includes forecasting certifications
Work EnvironmentDesign, develop, and maintain radar systems; labs and technical facilitiesWeather forecasting, data analysis, field research; offices and outdoor settings
Industry UsagePrimarily in aerospace, defense, and weather technology companiesWeather services, research institutions, media outlets

While both roles involve weather-related technology, Weather Radar Engineers focus on developing and maintaining radar systems, whereas Meteorologists analyze weather data to forecast conditions. Both careers require strong technical skills but serve different functions within the weather industry.
